We had an au pair once who insisted that she wanted to live out, but it didnt work out. The accommodation is such an important part of an au pair package, if you dont provide it, then the au pair is not really getting sufficient reward.

Au pair pay is low, the big draw is that they can come to a foreign country for 6 months or a year, and know that they have a safe, warm place to live, with family backup, eg telephone, internet connection, washing machine.

If you want live-out help, then realistically, you are going to have to pay the going wage for a nanny or baby-sitter.

I had one - she is now a Nanny for another mumsnetter. She used to come on a Monday and a Wednesday - 10 hours, I paid her £60 a week. It was wonderful. She used to clean, take dds to their activities and take baby ds for walks so I could catch up on my sleep. I found her on gumtree - she was previously a live-in AP but got married.
