Nanny flying home for Christmas. Do you cover the trasportation to/from airport?

Nanny is flying "home" for Christmas. Just wondering, do other's provide the transport to/from airport for her or does she fend for herself.

We are about 30/45 minutes from the airport so not a huge inconvenience. It's just the times of her fights are rather inconvenient. I've already broken the news that we can't do it on her outbound flight. But was thinking maybe I should send a taxi to collect her when she returns (at 7:00am on New Years Day). Don't really want to be up and out with the kids on New years day before 7:00am!

Am I being selfish mean old bag of an employer?

why? Surely if you go on Holiday you would not expect your employer to help you out with the way to and from?

Think about the cost of the taxi first.

tbh, and I speak as someone who has been a nanny before I get shot, it wouldn't have ocurred to me to do anything other than cover my own fare to and from the airport.

Who booked the flights?

If you want to be very kind, you could drop her at the airport for her outbound flight, even if it means her hanging around in duty free for hours.

If she gets a decent salary then she can sort herself out. I wouldn't expect lifts or anything although when i nannied in America i do remember my bosses taking me to the airport but they were rather a long way and i didn't earn much either so it was a help. I'm sure she would appreciate it if you did offer some help though.

When I was an au pair 16 years ago my employers paid my ticket home but I came back early so had to pay that myself.

3JinglesandnoBells · 19/12/2007 19:25

NAB, being an Au Pair is very different though to being a Nanny

hatwoman · 19/12/2007 19:29

our nanny is also flying home and like the otehrs this hadn't occured to me (agree that it's very different for an au pair). we give her a big bonus that she can spend how she likes

DarthVader · 19/12/2007 19:33

A lift to/from the nearest railway station or bus station which has a direct route to the airport is fine.

AMerryScot · 19/12/2007 19:35

With an aupair, you are only expected to cover the cost of transportation from the first port of call in the UK. You are not expected to cover any part of the cost of intermediate trips.

New Year's Day is awkward because there won't be a full public transport service, but equally, taxi fares will be double or more.

in order to get a good idea of your options.

MerryScot...what I meant was, that an Au Pair doesn't get paid much, so, it would be a nice for them not to have to pay for their travel , possibly oversea....Nannies get paid a good wage...

hatwoman · 19/12/2007 19:59

is she live in or out? not that it really makes a difference but live in I'd be reasonably likely to offer a lift somewhere. live out entails you going to pick her up (ours is live out)

MightyMoosh · 19/12/2007 20:38

When I went on holiday in oct I had planned to walk to bus stop, 30 min journey, walk to tube, 30 min ride... employer offered to pay for taxi, said thanks but I'll get myself there (afternoon check in) but it was raining v hard so did take her up on it, £20 very gladly recieved, found own way home (bus, fell asleep after night flight) I am live-in.

jINGLESbells · 19/12/2007 21:31

My AP wanted to fly in and out of Stansted as that's the cheapest flight. However we are about 3.5 hours away!
We gave her a lift to liverpool street to catch the stansted express.

Quattrocento · 19/12/2007 21:33

I've arranged for the train ticket - couldn't make the times - did pay for it but not paid for flights - don't know if that makes me a mean old bag - tell me if so.

GloriaInEleusis · 19/12/2007 21:38

Sounds like it's not required -- but we might do it because we are nice.

Oh, I know. I have been both, I was just putting in my experience.
