Current Going Rate for a Babysitter?

Those who use / have used babysitters recently, how much would you roughly be expecting to pay? (per hour) Is there a difference between the number of children?

I am in south London but open to hearing from other areas

South London here too. We have one that’s £12 an hour and another who’s more experienced but charges £16. I also tip about 19% and provide a taxi home as you’ve got to keep them sweet!

LakeShoreD · 16/11/2021 18:31

10% rather, 19 would be rather random.

Very useful, thank you! May I ask, how many children is that for?

2 kids- 4 years and 9 months old but they’re good sleepers and we’ll do the baby’s bedtime before we go out so they’ve never actually met him and the 4YO is bribed with the promise of shit sugary cereal the next morning if she goes to sleep without a fuss!

Oblomov21 · 16/11/2021 19:06

Goodness that's a lot. I had no idea the hourly rate was so high.

WildStallyn · 16/11/2021 19:11

London suburbs and using a babysitter next week for the first time in a few years. She's asked for £8/hour and we've also offered to pay for her taxi home.

WildStallyn · 16/11/2021 19:12

This is an experienced and highly recommended 18yo. 2 DC 8 & 6.

Hotcuppatea · 16/11/2021 19:13

My 15 year old is about to start babysitting. She'll be charging £5/hr which I think is fair. We're in west London.

Cyclingforcake · 16/11/2021 19:14

Yorkshire- 17y old with a bit of childcare experience as their Mum is a childminder. Asked for £6/h which we round up to something ending in 0.

TheCheesyBakedBean · 16/11/2021 19:15

£10 an hour. If they charge less, I always tip up to £10 an hour. Doesn't seem fair to pay less, minimum wage is going up to £9.50 soon and kids are hard work (especially mine!)

roses2 · 16/11/2021 19:18

£12/hour in NW London for a 22 year old who can cook. She baths them, put them to bed and spends most of the time on her phone. No taxi as she lives a 10 minute walk away. My two are age 5 and 8.

SaturdayKitchenDisco · 16/11/2021 19:19

Also south london. We pay £8 /10 an hour for teenage neighbours. I do get them snacks. But dc are older so don't need putting to bed etc...

LakeShoreD · 16/11/2021 19:25

I should add that ours are childcare professionals- one is a nanny and the other a nursery nurse. Living wage is £9 an hour now isn’t it? So I don’t think £12 an hour is at all pricey for a professional adult (the £16 per hour one is expensive though!). I’d expect a teen to be much less obviously but sadly we don’t know any.

Applefruitcake · 17/11/2021 13:54

Thanks everyone! I think £12 an hour sounds reasonable for a professional nanny. £16 is quite high though 😬 especially if the kids are asleep. Obviously in the case of teenagers, the price range is a bit different

South Wales- £8/9 hours for late teens/20 somethings
£10-£12 an hour for adults which is similar to what we paid in London. I’ve had the odd higher request £12-£15 which we’ve paid when needed.

Thehop · 23/11/2021 19:43

I’m 42, Yorkshire. I have an early years degree and many years experience. Up to date paediatric first aid and food hygiene.

I charge £10 per hour and will do ironing once they’re in bed.

Classicblunder · 25/11/2021 07:03

Also in South London and use experienced staff from our son's nursery - we asked them what they charged and they said £10/hr. We round up obviously which often works out well for the babysitter if we are out for say 3hours and 10 mins and our kids are asleep for the whole time. If it was daytime, I would offer more
