What are you getting your nanny for Christmas (or how much are you spending?) and Nannies - what presents do you like??

I have had my nanny since the start of September (first time)and am in a quandry as to what to get her for Christmas. I don't even know how much I should be spending!
On the one hand I don't want to appear as though I don't value her, but on the other, I don't want to overspend and raise her expectations for subsequent gifts!
She is going to visit her brother in NY for Christmas, so no point in getting her electricals or cosmetics as she could get them cheaper there.

So, should it be £50? £100? more?
And suggestions would be appreciated too.

(She is mid-thirties, and I pay her 320 per week, if that helps / matters)

thanks

How about some dollars to take with her to spend?
This thread was done a few days ago and i mentioned i received a day at a Champneys health spa with many treatments also-it was amazing but did equate to a whole weeks pay!
What you spend is so upto you!
As a nanny of 10yrs i had various from the families i worked for, from nothing to a candle stick holder to the above mentioned.
One year i had a promise of a big cash bonus when my bosses recieved theirs to help me with my first home, guess what it never arrived as in the meantime i fell pregnant and they weren't happy as it 'ruined their plans' (I was then sacked because of the pregnacy-their exact words)

I am sure whatever you buy you Nanny she will be very grateful, i do feel the dollars idea is a good option....

For a nanny you've had for a only a few months, I'd say somewhere aroud £50-£100 is plenty. If you can afford and are happy to part with more, then I'm sure she'll be happy for that. But, I don't think it's obligatory.

I usually compare it to what I'm giving the kids. I figure if the budget for nanny's present is on par with the budget for each of my kids, then I'm being fair.

Thank you (and sorry if this has been done before - I did do a quick scan, honest!!

I think about £50-75 is right as she hasn't been with you very long.

"if the budget for nanny's present is on par with the budget for each of my kids, then I'm being fair"

Seriously? you spend the same on an employee as you do on your children?
I spend £50 on my nanny at Xmas and reckon she is doing well.

GloriaInEleusis · 13/12/2007 11:10

Not quite the same, but it's not that far off.

Not sure why this is so shocking actually?

My nanny will get one week net pay as a Christmas bonus.

There is no way I will spend £350 on presents for DS. He is 2.

What about something for her trip a new digital camera, photo album, good book, travel guide american dollars.

Otherwise I usually make up gifts so my sister is into cooking so I got alots of cookery things a bowl, apron, cooker book, funny little masher etc and other cookery stuff and tied it all up in a "hamper style"

You could do the same eg someone who likes comedy could get a comedy dvd/book and a couple of tickets to a comedy night at the local theatre all wrapped up in a quirky box.

Someone who loves romantic comedies, a lovely warm snugly throw/blanket, a romcom dvd, a packet of posh biscuits/chocolates and some warm socks.

Someone who enjoys art; sketch book, art medium eg chalks, paint, a book about an artist, a canvas and maybe tickets to see an art exhibition.

etc etc

You could get her an amazon.com gift certificate and she could go shopping for delivery to new yor before she gets there. Hence having more time for touristy things.

I was in NY for my birthday and my nanny family bought me a ticket to a broadway show. Was fantastic and most appreciated!
