I'm a live-in nanny for three children (3y, 2y and 11 weeks) 2y boy has started climbing out of his cot at bedtime and leaving his room- not crying, talking, he just comes out. Trying with mum rapid return technique- but looking for any advice from a nanny etc pov. Have found him on the stairs at 9.30 this week, just standing there. He cant get back in his cot so cant close door, he'll play all night. really difficult to deal with, particularly with the other two.

a stair gate on the bedroom door?
works for me . . . ds 3 next week has just worked out how to open one on kitchen but hasn't yet occured to him to escape his bedroom

sorry ds 3yrs next week

Stairgate on his door would work. Plus if he can climb out maybe it's time to take the side of the crib off so he can scoot back in if he wants to? My old charge at aged 2.7 climbed out and so we removed the side of the crib making it a toddler bed and he just got back in eventually. We also removed toys from his room for a few nights so it became boring to get out of bed. After a week or so he just stayed in bed, or fell asleep very near to it.

I dont think we could do that, cos then the door would need to stay open and he's on the same floor as baby (still feeding every three-four hours, adding to mums probs!) so he needs a closed door as the lights on and off all night. And he would climb over it, he can climb over the other stair gates in the house.

Taking toys out would help I think, I've already taken out noisy toys and nappy cream etc. but he pulls his changing table around, climbs in and out of his sofa and on the mantlepiece. He even spends ages just playing in the curtains. Taking the side off his cot is good, hadnt considered that. Will suggest to mum in morning.

you can get taller stairgates for dogs!!!!

mananny · 04/12/2007 21:22

It might help if the side is off as he can then get back into bed himself, as he might just be standing around awake as he has no clue/ability to be able to get back into bed. He sounds like a little monkey LOL Good luck with him! I look after 2yr old twins and we're having the joys of them shouting to each other at 3am and waking up the whole house (I live out thank God but I get the rundown in the morning!). Gotta love 'em!!!!

MightyMoosh · 04/12/2007 21:32

oh but I love him, he's such a cutie! but I just want a solution... mum is so tired already, from baby, thank a the gods he's not a screamer but the quiet thing is bad as we have to keep looking for him, we dont know where he's gone! he doesnt have a nap at all in the day, gets up at 5.30-6 am so WHY ISNT HE TIRED?!? this is a boy who will happily fall on his face and get up smiling. He turned two last week!

Update- have told mum about suggestions, have removed all toys etc BUT he spent quiet time (used to be nap time, alas no more) pulling apart nappy bags and playing in curtains. returned him (between me and mum) 20+ times tonight. when cooking tea, heard a little voice behind me... mum feels that, as getting big boys bed was reward for older boy removing cot side would be viewed as reward. stairgate dismissed. babysitting tonight involves sitting outside his room as he just walks around the dark house without me knowing. feeling a bit mental.

I'm having exactly the same issue with my 2 year old charge! Except she is a screamer and shares a room with her five year old brother. It took me an hour to get her to stay in her bed tonight - and just as she fell asleep her mum got home and she woke up again. Mum then gave her a load of chocolate biscuits and let her play downstairs for an hour...

omega2 · 06/12/2007 13:11

what about trying a sleeping bag?

RahRahRachel · 06/12/2007 13:20

My charge has a sleeping bag and it makes no difference to her.

MightyMoosh · 06/12/2007 23:55

He has been in a sleeping bag since a few weeks old, he just takes it off. day off today, so I dont know what tonight was like... he was asleep when I got back at 11.15.
