If you were paying your childminder £50 a day in 2016 for dc1, how much would you be expecting to pay in 2022 for dc2? Just wondering how much increase is reasonable?

Looking on the Bank of England inflation calculator £50 in 2016 to 2020 rises to just over £55. But I suspect it is more likely to be more than that with some providers. This would be because funding for 2,3 & 4 year old children hasn't risen in line with inflation and although providers will ask for contributions to cover the extra costs above what they receive they are likely to charge more for babies as that is a way to cover the increased costs in the sector.

Thank you! I'm actually the childminder and currently charging £57. I'm meeting them tomorrow to discuss dc2 coming to me and wondering how they will react to the cost increase. It occurred to me today that they might be expecting it to be the same.

Are your prices in line with other CMs in the area?

Shapesorted · 26/08/2021 22:22

I'm a tiny bit below (£60 average) but not sure they will have researched or just assumed I will have her since I had the first.

I don’t think they would be reasonable to expect your fees hadn’t changed in the last 6 years. Mine have increased considerably in that time, but so have my qualifications and my experience.

I'd expect to pay between £60-65
