in january for one day a week i will have an overlap of 45 minutes on my under fives numbers if i (hopefully) find a new full-time mindee - so do i need to apply for a variation in the hope of a new mindee or should i wait until i have found one?
did that make sense?!

Think you need to wait until you are certain that you will need a variation - as the variation may need to be for a specifically named child.
Will you be wanting a chance from 3 under 5's to 4 under 5's (with no change to total under 8's)? You may get permission to have 4 under 5's if siblings are involved. If they are not siblings, then Ofsted may not grant a variation. See childminding guidance 2004 - HMI 2089 for details about applying for 4 under 5's.

They might write the cert for the actual specific 45 mins (they did for me)

They have seemed to stop putting names on certs since they go on-line
