Ofsted Want Your Views - How Much Info Should Be Available To Parents?

Ofsted Consultation for the publication of the register of childcare providers

They would like your views with regard to the following information being available:

Name and address of registered person
Business name where provided
Unique reference (this is the provider's identity number)
Date of registration
Type of provision such as childminder or provider of other childcare
Numbers and ages of children registered to care for
Times and duration of the provider
Conditions attached to registration
Telephone number/fax/email
Name of Local Authority where the provision is registered
Enforcement action Ofsted has taken against the provider; for example, when Ofsted has cancelled or suspended a provider's registration
Information connected with enforcement action Ofsted has taken against the provider, for example when Ofsted has cancelled or suspended a provider's registration
Information connected with the provider's compliance with requirements; for example, relevant standards
If appropriate, the date when the provider stopped being registered
Information about complaints made against the provider that didn't result in enforcement action

If all these are decided to be made public, then Parents will be able to search for a childminder by postcode, look at the registration document & last inspection report, and then contact the childminder - without the need to go via CIS.

This I see as being a GOOD thing, as it puts childminders back in the same playing field as nurseries - where a lot of business information is available publicly. However, I am sure some people may not want all this info shown... perhaps on security grounds.

The Ofsted consultation runs until February 2008, so make your views known to Ofsted.

Ofsted would like views from PARENTS, Childminders and Home Childcarers/Approved Nannies, as well as local authorities - so if you use a childminder, are looking for a childminder, or if you are a childminder,

let Ofsted know your view

am a registered childminder and i love that but without afull address just boscode will be fine and with scound part of the name it is just for save

As an approved nanny I don't think my address is going to help! And I'd rather not have it up there - I'd rather put the locality that I'm willing to work in. Also time and duration I'm pretty flexible on so that might be difficult.

I don't actually know how many children I'm "registered" to care for, although my insurance states up to 6 children.

For childminders I can see the point of all that information and am quite surprised it's not available already.

frannikin - agree with you that some of the info is a bit irrelevant for us Home Childcarers. I also wonder what the registered address for us is, as certainly on the form I completed, I had to give the address of my nanny job - but it's me as individual that is actually registered, not the premises.

elzulafi - postcode plus surname can be used to obtain full address details (eg. via Electoral Role), so your home address would never be fully hidden - if that is your intention. However, it would mean that a parent would need to call or e-mail you, rather than just knock on the door (as I expect most parents would not resort to looking at Electoral Role, or other data sources, to find out the house number).

Please fill in the short form to let Ofsted know your views - Consultation. If you don't complete it, Ofsted will never know your view - they do have a section on the form for Any Other Comments, so you can add a bit of detail about what you would / would not like.

If Ofsted have cancelled someones registration why keep them on the list and tell people 'They will have lost enough. How cruel are ofsted' It wouldnt be long before childminders joined the teachers who have already killed themselves because of ofsted'IF o fsted stop someone working why should this be made public also a lot of parents are intelligent people and capable of making their own decisions good childminders could be short of work because of mean inspectors,

Why bother - Ofsted do not listen to anyone but themselves. Their inspections are at best farcical and meaningless.

The reason for the consultation is actually to meet their obligations NOT to change their views based on your opinion. Why should you help them meet their responsibilities.

I worked for a similar organisation for over 30 years and people should understand the reasons why these consultations are produced. European law dicates that a consultation process has to be met and that's it.
