I live in North West so wages up here arent as high. I charge £25 per day (full-time)and £45 before and after school.

OFSTED told me I should charge £4+ an hour but they live in cloud cuckoo land if they think parents will afford to pay that. I know I have NVQ Level 3 but parents don't even know what that is until you tell them its a nursery nurse qualification.

Perhaps ask other childminders or your childminder co-ordinators if you have them and see what the going rate is around your area.

Try contacting other childminders - I suggest via e-mail, so you don't waste too much of their time - with regard to establishing how much they charge. Also look out for childminder websites, as those may give details of fees.

Islington Childminder Vacancy List also provides fee details for some childminders.
From a quick glance at it, £6-£7 per hour seems likely to be typical.

Think about pricing... what you include and don't include in that price. For example, I would expect most childminders do not include Nappies. I would expect that most charge extra for meals, outings, school deliver/pick-up.

Hi thanks nannynick, I was thinking £5 hour full time, and £7 part time including meals and stuff like nappies, or do you think this wud to cheap?

It is hard to say, as I don't know what your costs are. However, I would be inclined to test the market a bit, so that you can get the best price parents are prepared to pay, especially as you are having inclusive (eg. no additional cost for meals/nappies) prices.

What are parents prepared to pay in your area... have you had any feedback from parents regarding your current fees? Do your fees get listed on ChildcareLink and/or the Vacancies list I linked to earlier - if so, is there a way for you to show that your fees include nappies and meals?

Just worked out who you are on the Childminder Vacancies list. I suggest you contact CIS on Monday (and send them an e-mail now) to get your info updated - as that Vacancies List is not listing things you may want, such as Your Home Phone Number (with 020 starting part), your fees, the schools you can collect from. Plus there is a spelling mistake in the notes section - and you may want the notes section rearranged, so that major features are put first - such as Fees Include Nappies And Food.

For your info, there are 143 Registered Childminders within a 1 mile radius of your home (Data from Ofsted.gov.uk, 25-Nov-2007) - one of those will of course be you, so you have 142 local competitors. That's a lot of competition in my view, so you need to make yourself different - fully inclusive pricing can be your difference.

Query... why is your email address not matching your name on the CIS list? May be an idea to get a new e-mail address to use which is either your CIS listed name, or which is more generic - N1Childminder@ perhaps. Just a thought.

Another thing... how many childcare places can you offer - I think you may only be able to offer 3 places for daytime and 1 for overnight (if I have worked out your reg. number correctly).
Therefore, if you had 3 full timers, that would be £15 per hour, before expenses and before tax. Have you worked out your profit per day say, if you have all 3 under 8 places full? Can you really afford to provide nappies, meals etc. in the price? Are you planning on taking a lot of over'8s after school to boost income?
