How many days paid hols to you give your Aupair

or indeed how many days are you prepared to give your aupair.

We give 20 days paid hols for someone with us 12 months. Current girl is staying 12 months and has been with us 4 months and has already used up her allowance. She is getting two weeks off at Christmas which brings her up to 32 days off in 5 months.

She is now looking to get more time off between Jan and when she leaves.

Feel like am being taken for a total ride.

take it out of her salary then.

at the end of the day, you are in control. Whole year's hols in 4 months sounds a bit rash, to say the least.

Nightynight · 21/11/2007 21:26

Ours gets 4 weeks, but only because that is the legal min in Germany. I prefer if they dont take it, and I pay them for it at the end. I have been lucky up til now, that they have preferred that too!

Nightynight · 21/11/2007 21:27

doh, just realised that is the same as UK. arithmetic up the spout.

scienceteacher · 21/11/2007 21:29

I thought the standard was one week paid every six months. Of course, they can negotiate to take unpaid leave.

nannyL · 21/11/2007 21:32

you say 2 weeks off at Xmas...

do you count that as 14 days?

cause surely several of the days are weekend / bank holidays that wouldnt count!

(I mean surely you wouldnt exeoct your au pair to work Xmas day)

however having 32 days off in 5 months does seem excessive so i think id tell ehr that shes used all ehr paid holiday and it will now become unpaid for the rest if the year

MrsRecycle · 21/11/2007 21:37

yes science t - the standard is one week for every 6 months. But I always give an extra weeks bonus for every 6 months completed making it 4 weeks. Mine always have more like 8 weeks holidays (they always have the school hols off) but then I don't give them extra when they have to look after dds when they are ill. It normally works out around the same, when I add it all up (if I can be bothered to).

jINGLESbells · 21/11/2007 23:03

I give the same, but I also usually give them a xmas bonus (1 weeks pay) and holiday money (another week) so actually..... I give 4 weeks paid a year

mishmash · 22/11/2007 01:28

NannyL - all days quoted exclude bank and public hols

Er, you don't?

She's technically not an employee, therefore has no rights to holidays. Au pairs are supposed to live as part of the family on a cultural exchange.

I only let ours have holiday when we have holidays. She goes home for Christmas, when we are abroad for Christmas, same Easter.

I think the norm is 2 weeks paid per year.

She will also get a holiday during February half term, but as that is no her choice, I will still pay her. She needs pocket money when we are away.

Also, she gets the odd long weekend. I am flexible, and she is flexible. She gets this because she is willing to put in more hours and is often "working" when she shouldnt when I need help.

I think yours is taking the piss. Just say no. Tell her to not bother coming back after Christmas, if she is not happy with this.
