If its early years foundation thing that all child carers are supposed to start doing, I have a copy in a safe place somewhere, I know I rang up and they sent it free fairly quickly, will let you know the people when I find it!

Smee - we were told we had a LEGAL OBLIGATION to go to the briefing and also the training HOWEVER the training is booked up now and they 'may do a mop up session next year but they don't know yet' Anyway, I got my pack at the briefing (where massive outrage broke out ) and haven't even opened it yet!

I've just flicked though the basic framework (yawn!) Good luck girls!

Just a small point. If a parent doesn't want their child to be tested/assessed/made to do real work whatever you want to call it, and all they want is for their precious lo to be loved and cherished in your home, does that mean you have failed as a cm and will only be able to get a satisfactory grading?

I know, I know, take it up with Ofsted!

smeeinachristmastreeinnit · 14/11/2007 16:29

maureen intresting point as im going to be asking my parents that very thing, and if they dont want me to assess etc their child then i shall be drafting up a document for them to sign to say they do not wish for me to do it! ofsted can say what they wish!!

I know, what are we supposed to do eh!!! Surely if we have to have 'permission' for taking photo's and stuff, we should have to have 'permission' for doing written obs???

smeeinachristmastreeinnit · 14/11/2007 18:18

exactly!
if a parent doesnt want me to do these obs etc then seriuosly what am i meant to do? do i upset ofsted by not doing them or risk losing mindees because of upseting the parents? not one of my parents actually agrees with the EYFS being compulsary for cms so what do i do????

I wonder if parents can just sign a permission form, so that their child opts out completely from EYFS! After all, some parents don't want their children having any kind of formal education before they start school at age 5. Thus they don't send their children to nursery/pre-school.

nannynick · 14/11/2007 18:47

Who are the observations for? If they are for the parents, and the parents don't want them, then that child's file is empty (apart from a signed letter from parents stating that they do not wish to have observations done on their child).

AskABusyPerson · 14/11/2007 22:03

I have been wondering the same - I do mostly ad-hoc childcare, e.g. last month I looked after a set of twins 3 times, at other times they are with parents or grandparents who will obviously not be doing the EYFS thing! Will be interesting to see what parents reactions are when we tell them we're doing obs/assessments, keeping records not just daily diaries (which I don't do for my ad-hoc'ers anyway at request of their parents!) and planning next development and teaching them to count to 1000 at the age of 9 months

I happened to flick through the EYFS when a mindee napping and something caught my eye about using a 'hundred square' and I thought I don't even know what one of those is!!!

MaureenMLove · 14/11/2007 22:15

I believe it is a grid of the numbers 1 - 100, like a snakes and ladders board. DD used to have one in her contact book at school. They can do all sorts of number work from it.

Glad I made a good point! So all you need is all your parents to sign something to say they don't want you to assess their lo's and close the file!

AskABusyPerson · 14/11/2007 22:24

Ah, I've learnt something new, thank you! My dd is only 5 so I've not seen them in her books yet!

My fingers are now itching to type up appropriate forms for 'EYFS Opt Outs'!!

looneytune · 14/11/2007 22:32

Same here - only got ds whose not quite 5 yet so also not seen anything like this. Should OPEN my EYFS pack at some point eh???
