Planning as an Assistant

Hi ladies,

I've currently started working with a childminder as an assistant, but I wanted to ask is it part of my role to plan for the kids?

I may come across as ignorant but I really don't know. I previously taught nursery but I'm now doing this for financial reasons after coming off maternity. I'm not ready to go back to the busy life of a nursery teacher with the whole planning and assessment. So all I'm asking is, is it part of my role to plan as I've been asked to by the childminder?

Thanks

Your role is surely whatever the childminder/you agree it is. Do you not want to plan anything?
Presumably in your nursery everyone planned things?

Was your previous job in a school nursery? In most childcare settings there isn’t such a strict hierarchy with only “the teacher” observing/assessing/planning - everyone does it.

Planning and the whole process isn't that demanding for 3 children it doesn't even have to be written how about suggesting you look at planning in the moment and following childrens interests. Ofsted love it and its a lot more interesting for the children.

As Jannier said, it doesn't have to be hard. You can see what they're interested in on Monday and make a plan for Tuesday based on that. It doesn't have to be written, but a quick note somewhere might be good, so you both know what's happening.

I do pitm i know what the next steps are and the type of activities that support them if a child spots something say on a walk we talk about it take photos then when in they will be printed for cutting, making puzzles using in tuff trays etc we might do an experiment such as drains and how they get blocked becouse we saw a man whole cover we might build our own birds nest etc but using things to promote next steps its quick and easy to find more online resources while they have a drink or ten minutes free play especially if there are two of you. Im on my third outstanding and have always been praised on how I follow childrens interests. I dont write anything other than a few next steps every half term so my assistants can refer to them.....we decide them together with parents. So everyone knows what we're hoping to achieve but again that's pretty fluid.
