How much is the rate for housekeeper / nanny

Hi

I’d really like to start looking for a house keeper / nanny for a live in role but I have no idea what the going rate is and before I approach any agencies or find someone through recommendations I wondered if anyone with this kind of help would be able to let me know how much you pay them? I’ve never had any kind of help at home so totally new to this hence asking. Based in London.

I went onto my local area's FB page and asked about childcare options. Some nannies and childminders contacted me. The nannies I spoke to said their rate was about £13-15 per hour before tax and that should be roughly the same for you as I also live in London.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 05/03/2021 07:02

Depends where you live OP

Mamabearwhere · 05/03/2021 07:47

@PresBide thank you. How do you calculate the pay if it’s a live in role?

It will be around £500 net per week, but you will need to budget to pay gross plus NI plus tax plus pension.

Info about average role and costs: www.snuggleschildcare.co.uk/live-in-nanny/

Pay calculator: www.nannytax.co.uk/gross-to-net-salary-calculator

Nannies often expect to negotiate salary as a net hourly wage, but make sure the contract expresses the salary as a gross wage.

@Mamabearwhere I have to admit I didn't look into a live in option but there are some agencies online which offer a range of nannies and options. I ended up going with a nursery instead.

Mamabearwhere · 05/03/2021 08:46

@PresBide that’s helpful thanks will look into agencies.

@Ahbahbahbah super helpful tip thank you I will keep that in mind.

How old is your child? What housework do you expect....most nannies work mainly with the children and do housework related to the children. Proper housekeeping dosent really go with being quality childcare

Ahbahbahbah · 06/03/2021 17:45

There are plenty of nanny-housekeeper roles out there. It’s important to be clear that you want a nanny-housekeeper rather than a normal nanny, but there’s nothing wrong with the role. It’s a bit insulting to suggest that it’s not possible to do both.

DarcyLewis · 06/03/2021 17:49

You probably want to look at offering £15 gross an hour for someone with experience.

Mamabearwhere · 06/03/2021 19:18

Thanks for all your input. I think I def need more of a housekeeper to keep on top of laundry, tidying, dishes, organising things etc and less so of a childcare nanny. Yes they may occasionally need to watch the baby while I take a 5 minute shower but predominantly housecare while I take care of my 3 kids. I’ll get in touch with some agencies and see but seems like approx £15 is the going rate per hour. I asked about live in because I wondered if it would be less since their housing would be covered living with us. I know some friends who have mentioned this but I haven’t asked them how much they pay, feels like a private question to ask people you know in real life.

@Ahbahbahbah
A trained nanny is there to primarily work with the development and needs of your child and should be focusing on that. Some people underestimate the role and thats whats insulting.

Ahbahbahbah · 06/03/2021 20:00

@jannier - And a trained nanny-housekeeper is there to look after the child and the house. Like a stay at home mum does all day every day. It’s completely achievable if you have kids who reliably nap, or go to nursery part time or go to school. The OP is not looking for a nanny who will also do housework, it is a different job.

@Mamabearwhere - are you looking for somebody who would have sole charge or for somebody to help in the house and occasionally distract the kids while you’re still in the house? If it’s mainly housework and just an occasional holding the baby while you have a shower you should look at a mother’s help, which would be a lot cheaper.

Mamabearwhere · 06/03/2021 20:59

@Ahbahbahbah oh someone else mentioned mother’s help to me offline so I will look into this as I think that’s exactly what I need. Thank you!

Ahbahbahbah · 07/03/2021 09:23

@Mamabearwhere - we had a mother’s help for a while, it was great! If you’re planning to be at home with the kids then you don’t really need a sole charge nanny.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 07/03/2021 10:22

@jannier I don't know what you think sahms do or how shit you think their focus on their child's development is?

I've a nanny housekeeper. She is brilliant with all 4 of my little kids and keeps on top of all the laundry, meals, cleaning, tidying as she does it. In the same way as I would if I was doing it. She may even be better at it than I would be but I like to think that's because she gets to clock off and go home to peace and quiet every evening and weekend.

Mamabearwhere · 07/03/2021 12:01

@WishingHopingThinkingPraying that’s great to hear. Where did you find your nanny housekeeper?

OP posts:
WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 07/03/2021 20:59

Gumtree😂😂😂

jannier · 08/03/2021 12:33

@WishingHopingThinkingPraying
Of course some can juggle but do you want a mum replacement who dosent concentrate on childcare but let's the children mainly free play or does thd op want professional childcare and education. No parent or adult can give 4 children the amount of messy play and support they could get in childcare and do housework more than throw stuff in a machine wash up and sweep. Obviously some only want kids kept safe fed and chores done but others want music time, reading, messy play, den building, construction....all day everyday.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 08/03/2021 12:40

Yeah, I guess I don't feel the need of formal stuff in the home beyond what they would have from me or DH if one of us was the daytime childcare. I genuinely don't think children need all day everyday activities and education at home.

Ahbahbahbah · 08/03/2021 13:16

@jannier - the OP has made clear that she wants mainly help with housework, and occasional help with the kids while she has a shower or something. Nanny housekeeper is not the same role as nanny. A nanny is there purely to do focused developmental activities. That’s not what all families want or need. Plenty of people prefer their children to have some time in nurseries or free playing, in which case it makes sense to employ somebody who can use that time constructively.

jannier · 08/03/2021 18:04

@Ahbahbahbah
The op didn't say this until after id asked what she primarily wanted and after your comments that I was answering. I then commented on wishinghopingthinkingd post.

Blondeshavemorefun · 16/03/2021 20:28

You don’t need a nanny /hk

You need a cleaner /hk/mothers help
