How long do you allow your aupair to use the phone for? (international calls)

I'm not sure what to say. I'd get her to use one of the cheap providers, so it will only cost 1p a minute anyway.

Not sure either but we are with Tiscali and it is free to 10 countries!!! France, Germany, Spain, Ireland, and more.....might be worth looking at and then you won't have to say anything unless she is totally monopolising the phone every night and no-one can reach you!

I bought an internet phone from tesco and pay £7 a month for unlimited international calls to landlines (specified countries only).
It's worth it as a valuable perk for her and keeps my landline free.
She can also take the phone to her room for privacy as it's cordless.

our nanny uses a calling card which she pays for.

We're with Virgin. If we pay an extra £1.50 per month, then it's only 2p per minute.

Sorry, x-posts there. We have a Skype headset, but haven't found it great.

Gooseegg - does that work via the internet? Like the idea of keeping the landline free.

We've only had one that took the piss. Other than that, a few short calls amounting to no more than £5 a month.

A Tesco Internet phone or something similir is a good thing.

Yes the base has two wires that just plug into a usb port and a mains socket.
Then you follow the registration disc instructions and set up a direct debit online for the call plan you would like. Then you are ready to go.

Telediscount are very good, we use it call relatives in other countries and it's megacheap

Thanks for that. Seems to be £8.50 per month now, or 2p/min PAYG. So to work out cheaper than telesavers or similar, she'd have to be using over 200 minutes per week. Hmmm, think we'll make a decision on that when we've finished our months trial as the cheapest cordless handset is £30ish. Probably a good option if having an aupair suits us though, just to have the freed up landline.

unlimited - yes you read that right!! use call18185.co.uk and it's only .5p a minute to most countries so they can chat away. My bill is never more than £3 a month even when they're on the phone for hours and hours.
