Chasing up pay

This is one of the worst parts about being a nanny. Parents always forgetting to pay. I hate chasing up for money. Once, twice. I can get it. But every month just gets annoying..
Does anyone else get this as a nanny?

I've worked for loads of families over the years. I've had a couple who were forgetful.
Been in this job about 6 months now and had to chase every month. I think I've only been paid on time once and even then I was at their house that morning so reminded them and it went in quickly.
Sorry. Ranting. But this just would not be acceptable in any other job..

That’s appalling. Find another job and walk; if you have enough other referees, I’d walk without notice as that’s a sufficient breach of contract on their part. I say this as an employer.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 31/01/2021 12:04

Why the hell haven’t they set it up as a standing order? I actually have that written into my contract that I’m to be paid on X day of the month by standing order.

It’s massively disrespectful of them.

toria658 · 31/01/2021 12:07

Are you able to include penalty clause payments? You have outgoings and it is a contract. One oversight is acceptable, every month is cheeky, rude and quite frankly how would they react if you were late for their dc? You ‘remember’ to go to work, they ‘remember’ to pay you.

EuroTrashed · 31/01/2021 12:10

@SmidgenofaPigeon it’s a different amount each month depending on the number of days in the month. That said, they could set an SO for a 30 day month & make adjustments.

Op do they use a nanny tax service and provide you with a payslip? It’s illegal not to supply the payslip. Realistically if it’s been this long like this, your best option is to walk

SmidgenofaPigeon · 31/01/2021 12:13

I’m a nanny on salary, my pay is the exact same every month- I bill for overtime separately.

I’m paid via Nanny Tax.

EuroTrashed · 31/01/2021 12:15

Really? Ours varies by length of month - maybe we are on gross per hour / x hours per week rather than gross annual? And the tax company calculates and provides the payslip but we have to pay - odd that the tax service is paying you

SmidgenofaPigeon · 31/01/2021 12:18

I mean obviously it comes from my boss but the amount is put into my account by my boss, I didn’t make that clear, sorry. I think it’s because I work longer hours in holidays and a bit less in term time (well. In normal times anyway) so yes the same salary every year and paid monthly with all the tax/national insurance already taken off.

Hi everyone, thanks for your responses. I have nanny friends where it happens too..

I am actually leaving soon, not because of this but due to other reasons, this just adds to the annoyance though. I wasn't sure if the other issues were making my judgements wrong and that this is really common.

To answer a few questions, I work for quite a few families (they all pay before pay day).
My gross pay is the exact same each month but my net pay does change occasionally due to tax codes sorting itself out.

They use tax free childcare so they have to log in and put the amount through there then it goes to my account.
I have said they need to do it a few days before pay day as sometimes it doesn't go through that day due to weekends/ Bank Holidays etc...
It is pay day today and nothing has come through. They have sent the payslip and said they've processed it but obviously it will be late now because it is a weekend.

I may add a clause in for my new families. It isn't on.

Payslip generally gets sent to the parents by the payroll provider around the 22-25th of the month, so there should be enough time to then make the necessary arrangements (such as paying money in to TFC account) so that payment can be made to their nanny at the end of the month.

TFC does not process payments after 3pm on Friday until 9am (I think) Monday as long as the Monday is not a bank holiday. Parents using the system should be aware of that though I do wonder if everyone does know, or remember.

newtb · 31/01/2021 13:46

Isn't it the law that your monthly pay has to be cleared funds in your account on the last working day of the month? Something to do with the trucking acts if I remember correctly.

Lubiluxe · 31/01/2021 14:24

Thanks. Yes I do think they should be paying me. I have told them it doesn't go through on weekends.
The payslip came to them on the 19th, I just looked (it is forwarded so I can see when payroll company sent to them)
I even told them on Monday 'don't forget it is pay day this week' and they said oh yes, we won't forget.
I will remind them that payments don't go through on weekends although I'm leaving soon. Grr.

How annoying and wrong and disrespectful

You shouldn’t have to remind

FudgeSundae · 03/02/2021 21:53

I’m a nanny employer and this is awful! I also pay via tax free childcare but I put the money into tax free childcare around the 20th when I get the payslip from the nanny employment bureau I use. Then I set up the payment days in advance to make sure it goes through on the last working day of the month. I have never been late and I would be mortified to be late. It’s a matter of respect!
