Hi, I'm having DD2 end Nov and need someone to take care of DD1 (3.5yrs) all of December including over Christmas if such a thing is possible. Tried nanny agency but they just laughed. Help!

where bouts r u?

nannynick · 26/10/2007 23:53

Location?

Do you need someone to live-in, or come to your home on a daily basis? Would taking your child to someone else's home (a childminder) be an option? What hours would you be requiring?

The more information you are able to provide, the greater the chance that we (mumsnet childminders/nannies) will be able to advise you on how to find someone suitable.

I hope you find someone suitable

Try advertising on gumtree. Good luck

DynamicNanny · 27/10/2007 21:06

Can you give us some more information

Sorry - assumed everyone knew - location is north kingston. Need live out mum's help, a few hours a day, but i haven't worked out which hours exactly and it might not be every day. Might be a combination of taking care of the newborn, or DD1 who is 3.5, for roughly a month during December. Thanks all

If you are wanting childcare for a newborn, I feel you should aim for a nanny, not a mothers help - as I feel a mothers help is more someone to help around the home with household duties, rather than actual childcare.

Ideally I suspect you want someone who is a master of all trades, so can help you with whatever needs doing at the time - catching up on laundry, cleaning, entertaining 3.5 year old, or encouraging newborn to sleep.

Try advertising locally, newsagents shop window for example. As you want someone live-out, the nearer they live to you the better. If you can be flexible in the hours you require, then with luck you can find someone already working in another job (or jobs) and who wants to add another small job to the ones they are already doing.

To be able to advertise though, you really need to work out what it is you ideally want, so that you can then advertise for say someone to do 10 hours per week, spread over say 3 days, but flexible on days and hours.
Alternatively, commit to a specific number of hours - or to having help only on specific days, as if someone works 3 days per week, they may be looking to fill 1 or 2 days per week, but they may need to be full days so they can pay their bills.

Hmm lots to think about, I suspect you're right Nannynick I want somebody who knows what they're doing in the childcare department...however a real pro might be hard to find over the holidays! Might try local bulletin boards but its' not looking too hopeful

have you thought about a post natal doula?

They may be more willing to help you?

eleusis · 29/10/2007 11:07

I think you should advertise on nannyjob.co.uk , on gumtree.com, and post a new thread here with (North Kingston) in the title. You might find someone has a nanny whom they could share because they are going away without the nanny for the hols. Of course nannies may have plans of their own, but then some might be happy to earn a bit of extra money.

Or, you might run through the list of local childminders if you are happy to have out-of-the-home childcare for the older one.

Try Surreychildcare on 0208 399 4199, they are in Surbiton, helped us find part-time nanny. Def worth a try. Much better than a certain other in your area.

shame you don't want live-in as i am free and would help you out for a while but its too far for me to commute
