Hello wise mumsnetters!

I'm looking for help to find a nanny but not sure where to start. Not even sure if we want a live in or part time nanny as of now, but we are lucky to have space for live in if that's what works.

Does anybody have recommendations for sites/ agencies and somewhere that may have a checklist of things to ask/ consider before making a decision? We're on London/Surrey border if that makes a difference

Thank you!

You need to decide what you want. Do you really want someone living at your home... think very carefully about that.

Part-time... how do you define that? What hours are you needing childcare, what days of the week? Start listing out the things you know you need.
Do you need a nanny who has newborn baby experience? Do you need someone with toddler experience? Do you need someone with experience of school aged children and has teaching experience as school may been Online/Home School for a while?

Do you need a nanny who is Ofsted registered (as you are in England) so you can use Tax Free Childcare scheme?

Do you need a nanny who can drive? Will you provide a car for them to use? Will they need to have a suitable car - is there parking (that can be a big issue in some parts of Outer London/Surrey).

Think about WHY you want a nanny... what do you want them to do? Make a list, that will then help you to create a profile on sites like Childcare.co.uk, Nannyjob.co.uk to recruit a local nanny.

I would speak yo a lcal manny agency or teo. Thry will probably help upu be able to hon fown exacyly whst you want and tun through the important questions eith you as wel as what you expect. I think often for a first time nanny its better to bet an agency to the sorting through.they still might not find the right person but you'll have a better chance. Agencies also can help to resolve any issues that may arise during the early parts of the job by speaking to both parties.

Think about salary... what will you be offering candidates?
Looking at a salary survey may help: www.greycoatlumleys.co.uk/news-events/salary-survey-2021/2021-greycoat-lumleys-salary-survey.pdf
I would anticipate that £12-£16 gross per hour would be a reasonable range in Surrey/London border area. Calculate that out to an annual gross salary, keeping in mind that your nanny gets at least 5.6 weeks paid holiday.

Start figuring out your costs... payroll admin, Employers National Insurance, employer pension contribution, cost of activities & mileage. I have written a lot about this over the last decade or so on here, so search Mumsnet.

I last got a nanny job via an agency in 2008. So I disagree about using an agency, some are good but some are not and it will cost you... so consider doing recruitment yourself but also be prepared to use an agency if you cannot find anyone. At the moment there seems to be quite a lot of people looking for work, so I don't think you will have much trouble finding people - the difficulty will be making sure they are a good fit with your family.
