I am working with as a nanny with three children, two at school one in nursery some of the week. I had a call from OFSTED saying that they wanted to inspect. Now I didn’t even know that they inspected nannies in private homes seems a little bit off. Only registered with OFSTED as the family wanted to claim their benefits for having a nanny.
Consequently I said to the man you must have this wrong I don’t need to be inspected do I I’m in a private home. He didn’t say anything to that and just said oh okay then and said goodbye.
I used to work in a school for twenty years and OFSTED inspections were horrible.Do I really need to be inspected by OFSTED in somebody’s private home?

You do get inspected as a Nanny. I've been inspected twice and you do get inspected in the private home.

Our nanny was inspected last year. Its not an inspection like a nursery gets. The woman who inspected her just wanted to look at her certificates and check she had all the relevant paper work to meet the requirements (childcare qual, first aid, DBS, public liability insurance) then asked her a few questions like what are the signs/symptoms of abuse and what would she do if suspected it and also about radicalisation and a few other bits.
We had to sign a form to say if we were happy for her to be seen in our home, as we could refuse if we wanted. The inspection doesn't need to be in thechilds home and can be in yours or a metal place such as a coffee shop. The children do not need to be present as its not an inspection on your ability to look after the. Its purely to check you meet the requirements and have all the evidence to be registered.

The inspection was less than an hour long.

Yes, a compliance inspection is done for 10% of nannies on the register each year. Many are being done remotely at the moment but sometimes they will do it physically. It is 15-30 minutes usually and involves checking paperwork (First Aid certificate, Insurance, childcare training / common core, DBS) and asking some questions about safeguarding children and keeping children safe.

As the parents are using the scheme (ofsted registration) to save money On their tax bill, yes I would expect ofsted to be inspecting nannies to ensure the government are not wasting money on rubbish ‘nannies’ who have no qualifications and have no idea on anything to do with childcare/first aid/safeguarding. It doesn’t matter if you are working in a private home or not. As a childminder I too work in My own private home and have to be inspected So parents can benefit financially for sending their child to a registered provider.
