Employ My mother

Does anyone have any advice as how to employ my mother directly to look after my 20 months years old ? She is in her 63’s and would be easier for her to get some paid hours from me instead of going to any other jobs . I would like to make it as legal as possible. I am a single parent .
Thanks!

You can employ her as a nanny straight away and use a company such as nanny tax to sort out the payroll etc. But if you want to claim any sort of childcare relief for your costs such as universal credit or tax free childcare she will need to be Ofsted registered which is quite a long process. Does she have any childcare qualifications already?

Employ her as a nanny. Nanny payroll companies can help with producing a contract of employment, producing payslips, telling you how much to pay HMRC etc.

As she is a relative of the child you cannot use any form of childcare funding. So cannot use Tax Free Childcare scheme for example.

www.childcarechoices.gov.uk has details of funding schemes. You could use a pre-school for some hours each week from term following 3rd Birthday.

@nannynick.
Families can use tax free childcare as long as they are Ofsted registered but they need to care for other peoples children too. They can't at this time access either the 2 or 3 year funding for relatives there is a campaign to change this but not getting far. But if you run a nursery or work in one a relatives child can get funding very odd.

Thanks for answering. No she does not , I have seen advice as if I register as a sole trader I may be able to employ her and than the gov website has payroll app which you could use to run payroll. What I am not sure is if I need to conceive a contract and other things like this. I won’t qualify for free tax credits anyway as I try working more to cover the living cost and ex partner doesn’t really help.

You don’t need to register as a sole trader

You just employ her so paying nmw contract paid holidays
