Childcare?

I've just started at my new job its just over the road from where I live. Ds is in a really nice nursery and has settled in really well. He goes there Monday Wednesday Thurs afternoons and Fridays. I work all week and so does Dp. Basically I'm stuck with what to do with him on Tuesdays and Thurs mornings. My mum said she will help out until I find something more permanent. He's on the waiting list at nursery for Tuesdays and Thurs morns but looks like he wont get a place until Sep next year. I dont want to put him in a dif nursery as he loves this one and is very convenient. Only a 2 min walk from home. So I'm thinking of getting a child minder. Have no idea how this all works. Do they come to my house or does he go to theres? Guess it varies. Whats the average fee? Could they take him to nursery for thurs afternoons? Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but just want to know a little more about it before I start ringing round.

If anyone can help, be much appreciated.

TIA

Hi there - you probably wouldn't have a problem finding a cm for those hours - it depends what vacancies they have. Your child would go to their house, and yes they would take him to nursery. What they charge depends on where you live - probably between £3-£5 an hour.

Good luck in finding one.

Thanks StrawberryMartini. I hope I can find one near mine. Ds nursery and the office are all so close. I start work at 8am so would be Brillo if there was a childminder close by. I'm going to google it now.

Thanks for answering questions. I suppose each childminder varies and has there own 'way' of doing things. I'll just have to call and see I guess.

Put your postcode in this website and it will list local CMs plus their prices

Do they come to my house or does he go to theres?

You take your child to the childminders house.

You can have care at your own home, but then the person is called a Nanny.

Whats the average fee?

It varies... post details of your location and someone may have an idea of rates in your area.
A very ball-park figure is £2.50 to £8 per hour... (see the problem, rates vary a lot depending on location!)

Could they take him to nursery for thurs afternoons?

Perhaps, I know a childminder who takes a mindee to nursery at 11.30am.

If you type your postcode into the Childminder search facility at www.ofsted.gov.uk then it will tell you the total number of registered childminders in a 5 mile radius of your home.
Best thing to do though is to contact your local Children's Information Service (usually your local council) and ask them to send you the latest childminder vacancies list.
www.childcarelink.gov.uk can provide the contact details for your local Children's Information Service (CIS), plus will list some details of local childminders (though do note that it does NOT LIST ALL childminders, best to get the list from CIS).
