CM Club: How to record Birth to Three Matters?

Katymac · 05/10/2007 14:46

I take photos, caption them the cross reference them

The OFSTED lady doesn't like this as there isn't enough information

So how do you record yours?

I do that and Inspector thought it was wonderful!!!!!!!!

Why Oh Why dont they all sing from the same hymn sheet.

I had worked hard to try and get a outstanding last time, only for the Inspector to tell me she had never given a outstanding and never would because she felt there is always something you can improve!!!!!!!!

Katymac · 05/10/2007 15:33

I thought it was pretty good too

But now what

I just spent days perfecting it (& emailing it to people) & now it's no good

Katy are you on a network, if so, ask yoyr coordinator to look at it, I had mune run passed them, they were more than happy with it , but a couple of my curriculum things they caould see that ofsted would want more and helped me put it all together.

Katymac · 05/10/2007 15:40

My network co-ordinator & I designed it together

She is going to be gutted

Would be interesting to see what another Inspector would say to one of the other CM's you have sent it to.

bloodsuckinglooney · 05/10/2007 15:49

Katy, tbh if it was me I'd be complaining to Ofsted about the fact one inspector thinks it's wonderful and another says not good enough. Doesn't make sense but when do they ever eh!!!

Ds's nursery (as in school nursery) do post in notes for observations. I know it's not b23 as obviously they start at 3 but that's all they do for whatever it is they do at nursery age.

Katymac · 05/10/2007 20:59

I am really interested in how B23 is recorded/documented?

I don't think persuing OFSTED is practical or sensible

bloodsuckinglooney · 06/10/2007 10:32

I know Katy but it's so bloomin annoying. One inspector could think someone is outstanding because of xyz but another inspector could think it's just not good enough for the same xyz - it's just not fair I agree it's not sensible to persue OFSTED, was just venting on your behalf however I personally have complained before due to major differences leaving us childminders confused. They said they make note of all these things as it shouldn't be happening.

Good luck with sorting the extra details for your bt2.

Katymac · 06/10/2007 18:59

Seems unfair to bump this on a saturday but anyone have any thoughts/suggestions

Katy I don't know what you mean .

Have I missed something really important?

I don't record Birth to Three Matters, only fill in Daily Diary.

Having small panic now.

However, had my 1st Inspection in January 2007, was awarded Good.

bloodsuckingLOONEY · 07/10/2007 11:27

I was told not to bother now because it's all changing for Foundation Stage and I'd just get confused. Still, I was going to do that thing with photo's but not sure now after what your silly inspector said.

KateF · 07/10/2007 11:47

Katymac-I think you have had a particularly picky inspector! The playgroup I work in has just been Ofsteded and passed and we record Birth to Three as you do - inspector was quite happy with it.

PASTIT · 07/10/2007 12:31

Please don't anyone panic - most childcarers are doing a fantastic job and your inspectors should be there to support you. If you do feel undermined by your inspector then he/she is not doing their job and you should complain!
With regard to the new Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS); it will not be a drastic change. It aims to bring together the Curriculum Guidance for the Foundation Stage (2000), the Birth to Three Matters (2002) framework and the National Standards for Under-8s Daycare and Childminding (2003). The change is just designed to make a more coherent and flexible approach to care and learning. Everything you have done for birth to 3 will still be valid.
The simplest way to satisfy inspectors is to be yourself and be proud of what you're doing but show them you're always willing to learn more and improve still further the wonderful experiences you already offer the children in your care.
As you've already noted each inspector is as different as each child and childcarer as we are all human so its impossible to have a "one fit" solution. As you are all committed enough to be asking these questions then I'm sure you're all providing varied and differentiated experiences building upon your children's individual needs and interests.
I would suggest you use your own recording methods - whatever method you feel suits you best but maybe modified a little to take into account any recommendations made by your inspector!!!! After all, you have to be pragmatic if your career is childcare! Then just cross reference to the EYFS and review periodically to ensure a variety of experiences offered. You really only need to make changes to what you're doing if you are not recording enough or you struggle to cross reference to EYFS.

Lazylou · 07/10/2007 12:43

Don't know whether this helps as I work in a Private Day Nursery, but we were recording BTTM in the same way as the FS with the sticker observations in their individual profile books. We have just started to use EYFS though and we are using the same obs method for that.

Katymac · 07/10/2007 16:29

I was so looking forward to EYFS as I had such a system going for B23

The network co-ordinator & I have spent months on it

We did next steps - so a 30 sec obs followed by how we would expand it

We take photos & link them to the focus (I think, you 16 for each colour)

So how do we do it now? What do we change?

OP posts:
hennipenni · 07/10/2007 21:24

Kty, I have just been to a study evening about EYFS. They said to record observations the same as we do now B23, either by use of a daily diary or by photos and a small sentence or post it note.

hennipenni · 07/10/2007 21:26

Plus also several minders on the course had been recently ofsteaded and some were told the the 0-5 tracker books are excellent for recording obs in, yet as usual other inspectors have been telling people that we shouldn't be using them as we're not nurseries!!

pinkrangernowwobbles · 07/10/2007 21:38

ladies, you may be able to Help, i have only been registered since march 07 and have only ever had age 7 or over due to me being pregnant, i have now had my baby and have a new mindie starting this week for 3 days a week, he is 18 months old, can someone please explain to me what i need to do for him with regard to obs and b23 as its all really confusing me!
TIA

Katymac · 16/10/2007 15:12

Pinkranger - I'm not sure I can help you as whta I do is as a network childminder -it's prob different as a non-network minder

But I am revisiting this as I need to get a handle on it

Are there any other people out there recording B23?
