Is it possible to find a part-time temporary nanny?

I’m likely to have a gap of a few months between me returning to work after maternity leave next year, and the nursery I would like my daughter to go to being able to take her. I wondered if I might find a temporary nanny? Ideally MIL might help for a day or two a week and perhaps DH and I can alternate 9-day fortnights for a few months so we would be looking at 2 or 3 days a week for a nanny. We could probably be flexible on what days they are.

I know this would be expensive but I would much rather have her cared for at home than go to a different nursery for a short while. Any ideas if this a possibility and where I would find someone? We live in an area where nannies are fairly common. I would be happy with a NWOC. Unfortunately a nanny isn’t affordable long term otherwise that’s what I would do.

Thanks for any ideas.

They’ll likely insist on being formally employed so you’d have to get a payroll co to register you with HMRC as an employer, draft a contract of employment, work out and pay for holidays in that time (and any SSP) and possibly even look at pension so it’s quite a faff (and expensive) for you for a part time temporary role. An agency nanny may be less faff and work out same cost. Otherwise a student or someone looking for casual self employed work perhaps?

Thanks @2kool4skool. I’m not averse to the faff of employment but an agency that billed me would be preferable. Does that kind of service exist? I’d prefer the same person for the few months rather than a different nanny each day/week with us/family covering their holidays.

Someone casual is a possibility but she will only be a year old so I would want someone with at least some experience.

I do realise this will be expensive and likely take up all my take home pay, but that’s fine if only for a few months. I did ask if I could delay my return to work but was told no, which is fair enough.

Yes you may find someone to do that. Advertise and be very clear about the length of the job. The more flexible the days are the better as then your job can be fitted in with something else the nanny already does.

Zest Payroll does very short run payroll. NannyPaye does a 6 month minimum charge. So there are payroll providers who don't charge a full year of admin upfront.

Thank you @nannynick I was certainly intending to be very up front about contract length, indefinitely don’t want to mislead anyone. I’ll look at the patrol provider, thanks.

Yes. You can get someone through an agency, Facebook nanny pages or childcare.co.uk. We found someone work to our very odd temporary schedule for 8 months a couple of years ago. Just bear in mind that you are looking for someone to fill a gap, not the most perfect nanny in the world who is going to be with you for 10 years. Ours was fine, she did the job, but if I’d been looking for a long term nanny I wouldn’t have picked her.

Nannytax also provides payroll services and have a 6 month min contract, but I think is more expensive than the other 2 mentioned.

Koru kids might have this sort of thing. I had a nanny from them for a few months until nursery had more space and they were very helpful.

Thank you all for the responses it’s given me some very useful pointers. Hopefully I can sort something.

My Temporary Nanny specialise in this sort of thing. I’m not sure about the costs or anything though.

Good luck with your search!

I used to be a nanny and this job would suit me perfectly. There will be someone out there.
