After school care

Hi, my sons' school are not sure if they're going to be able to open in September, so I'm currently looking for alternative childcare for the 3 days I work. They are aged 4 and 7. I haven't been able to find any childminders that can collect from the school so I'm looking for a babysitter/nanny that could collect them and bring them back to our house until I get home from work.

I've not employed someone to provide childcare in my home before so would like advice please? Would the person need to be registered with Ofsted? If they're employed as a nanny I know you need to provide employment rights such as sick pay etc - how does this work if I'm only employing them for around 6 hours per week? Many thanks for any responses

If you’re paying less than £118/week and it’s their only job, you don’t need to register as an employer with HMRC and they wouldn’t be eligible for a pension or sick pay either.

The nanny only needs to be registered with Ofsted if you want to use childcare vouchers - but I’d be amazed if a registered nanny was willing to work only 6 hours a week. I think it’s more likely that you’d get someone who wanted a bit of extra pocket money (older person or sixth form student).

Childcare. Co. UK often has those who are not childminders etc but available. Many with dbs. But obviously you need to do your own due diligence.

You may have already explored this but sometimes local nurseries and children’s centres offer pickup and after school care. Is there anything like this in your area.

Hi, thanks so much for the responses. Thanks for info about nannies, yes I thought just after school care may be difficult to find. I have been on childcare.co.uk and had responses from people that could provide babysitting, but I wasn't sure if they needed to be registered if providing regular childcare. I haven't considered nurseries/children's centres, I'll have a look

I believe only if they provide more than 2 hours a day.

No if they work from your home they dont need to be registered. If they are using their car they would need special insurance.

Thank you for the info, that's really helpful
