HM revenue cheque

Hey there,
Looking for some advice, I know it's normally Nanny Nick who's on the ball with these things but anyone who can offer help.
I've just received a repayment of income tax for £750. I've been a nanny for over 25 years and have received a few of these but never this high.
The tax year though is for 2017-2018 so I'm wondering why this has turned up now ?
During 2017 I only worked until September and then took the rest of the year off and then started with my current family in January 2018.
My current family use nanny tax to sort out all my tax and NI side of things so I'm sure everything they've done is ok but I'm wondering should I bring it up with them and also check if everything has been set up properly. I've had regular letters from HM Revenue including all the relevant tax stuff they send each year and there hasn't been any problems that I've noticed.
Just a bit confused why it's turned up now nearly 3 years later ?

www.gov.uk/personal-tax-account may show you the details for that tax year. Worth logging in to see if it does or not. If it does it may show every month that HMRC knows you had income and the amount of that income. If you still have payslips from that time you can then cross reference that data. Otherwise the P60 from April 2018 will contain a total figure for the tax year.

You worked April-September. Did not work October, November, December. Then did work January to March. So you had three months of no income. When you started the job in January, they may have started you on Basic Rate tax. Your P45 from the job you left in September may then have been processed but for some reason maybe a new cumulative tax code was not issued. So instead you may have remained on Basic Rate or may have been on a Month 1 code (so using 1/12th of annual allowance each month).

HMRC can take quite some time to look back over records to see if anything needs fixing, so getting a rebate now does not surprise me. I would though want to be checking the figures... so if it was me I would be digging out the P60 and looking for payslips/online data to see what income was reported to HMRC and what happened about tax codes during that tax year, in particular when the new job was started. I would not bring it up with an employer as it's not something that they can do anything about. It is purely between you and HMRC. I would cash the cheque, stick it in a savings account and leave it there whilst I investigated it myself so I had no doubt that it wasn't an HMRC error.

Full personal tax allowance in 2017/18 tax year was £11,500
www.gov.uk/government/publications/rates-and-allowances-income-tax/income-tax-rates-and-allowances-current-and-past
Your personal allowance may have been different but that will help give you a starting point for an Income Tax calculation if you cannot find your tax codes from that year.

Thanks for the help. It's a lot to take in especially if I have to trawl through everything myself that's why it's good to be employed, not self employed and have to try and make sense if it all.
I trust at the end of the day HM revenue know what they're doing much more than I do and are unlikely to part with any money unless it's correct 😆
