What are the rules and regulations on working in childcare in Scotland?

Hi, I am thinking that there might be opportunities for working in childcare over the summer and possibly beyond due to holiday clubs/schools not being open full time or open for fewer children.

Does anyone know what the procedure is in Scotland for looking after a child in someones house? I'm thinking in terms of registration, paperwork etc. I'm asking for a young relative who is probably going to lose her job shortly.

Thanks

I know English law well but not Scottish. Most things to do with Childcare Law are the same but there will be some differences, especially around curriculum and possibly adult:child ratio.

Your relative needs to do some research. Initially they need to determine where the childcare will be provided: their home (so are a childminder) or the home of the children (so are a nanny).

Once they have established the Childcare legal requirements then they need to look at the law about Taxation. A nanny is almost always an employee. A childminder is running a business.

There are no qualifications needed to look after a child in the persons home (nanny) anyone can do it. You are usually responsible for declaring your own earnings. You can't look after a child in your own home (and charge) unless you are a registered childminder.
