How much for a bonus for nanny?

Our nanny who started with us this year usually works 5.5 hours a day term time and 12 hours a day in holidays. Due to schools being shut she has been working all day helping home school the children. For every hour of overtime she is paid, so is making a lot more money than usual at the moment from all the extra hours. I would like to give her a one off bonus for getting to end of term and helping us out so massively. I don’t know what a reasonable sum is. What do you think? One factor I have in mind is she is new and so I don’t want to give something enormous and then not be in a position to replicate that again. Her pay is £12/hour gross. If relevant DH and I have both had pay cuts and worried about job security because of covid. Thanks

Why don’t you give her a gift instead of a bonus, you day she’s been earning more anyway? You could get her a £100 gift card for somewhere nice?

Thanks @yorkshiremummyof1. I should have mentioned she has some debt so I know cash would be highly appreciated in fact she has been really pleased with the overtime as that is helping her clear this so am keen to give money (via payroll) rather than a gift.

I think £150 would be a lovely amount to show her you’re grateful - about a day’s extra pay.
But only pay it if you can afford it!

Do you think £100 is sufficient? I found old threads on here saying nanny bonus often a week’s pay which would be on usual annual salary with different hours in term time to holidays £480 and on current 12/hours a day would be £720. Shock

@Yorkshiremummyof1 @Oly4 thanks both for confirming I don’t need to bankrupt myself!

Around 10% of her usual monthly wage?

I’d be happy with £150 as a thank you! Then maybe a bit more as a Christmas bonus.
I think it’s fine. We’re in a pandemic.. she’s employed and you’re giving her extra hours which she wants. I think she’d be happy with that, especially if you’re having some financial concerns yourself

Normal nanny Christmas bonus is one weeks salary, but that’s a christmas/annual bonus (and not all families do it).

You’re just giving a gift to show appreciation, you don’t need to worry about the normal bonus.

Bear in mind that if you pay this extra cash via payroll you’ll also be paying tax on it.

Thanks all. Yes, tax and pension on it so it’s expensive but still want her to get a reasonable amount.
