Is your nanny returning now?

Is your nanny coming back to work now, if furloughed? metro.co.uk/2020/05/08/cleaners-nannies-can-go-back-work-long-symptom-free-12674435/

I’m not sure how I feel about this...

Our nanny is furloughed and we are topping up to 100% of her salary. Her contract with us finishes soon and we are both working from home so are covering home schooling. I am worried about keeping her and her children (who she brings with her) safe as her employer and concerned about mixing households.

Our nanny has been back for 2 weeks now. I can actually breath, work and not worry about my toddler having an accident. We furloughed and topped up for the 6 weeks she was off, but it broke us and was dangerous.
It was impossible to get much done with 3 children to look after, so I considered unpaid leave or even quitting I was that tired and desperate.

If she hadn’t returned, we would have had to get a temporary nanny, which in reality would have meant we’d have got rid of her.

It’s going ok and I’m hoping the relationship is repairing.

@2kool4skool I totally get your anger. I was there. You only have to look at the nanny chat groups to see the frenzy that some nannies have got themselves into - even the ones working throughout this are fed up of the mass hysteria.

Those saying they won’t go back until whenever ‘it’s safe’ seriously need to get a grip. When exactly do they think this will be?! A vaccine realistically won’t be available for 18 months. We don’t yet have a reliable treatment.

The risk for a nanny is low compared to so many other professions (assuming 1 family, no public transport) and why do they think they are any different to millions of others having to work?! They should try speaking to the shop keepers, the carers, NHS frontline, factory workers. etc.

It’s insane! Some are considering an employee blacklist for parents who didn’t furlough, they’re setting up petitions etc. I’m speechless!

For anyone whose nanny has gone back to work, what type of cleaning or other additional measures have you taken in your home? I'm in Scotland so still in lockdown for another week but trying to plan ahead for a return to work. Many thanks

Please see attached a risk assessment that we have been sent by BAPN which you should go through with your nanny/employer to make sure you are all comfortable with the new arrangements that can be put in place.

Along with these measures, I am suggesting that you should also undertake the following where possible, this is just a guide and you should adjust so applicable for every household;

Where possible a separate toilet and sink should be provided for the nanny's sole use

Separate hand towel (clean 1 each day) (nannies you may wish to provide the towel)

Nannies- wash hands upon arriving at work as soon as you arrive and everyone to wash hands regularly

Temperatures to be taken before leaving for work/before the nanny arrives of both adults and children

Any temperature and the nanny should not be at work same applies if anyone shows any other symptoms

Social distancing- obviously the nanny can't social distance from the children but all adults must social distance ie not be in the same room together unless you are 2m apart so rooms such as kitchens, should be used at different times

Nannies- it is being advised that you change your clothes as soon as you arrive home, put them in the wash, clean clothes every day

Shoes should not be worn in the house

Nannies- some nannies are preferring to provide their own lunch, mug, plate and cutlery

Nannies- sanitise your hands after leaving work before you drive home.

Employers- please see note on risk assessment re cars.

Employers- if you have a cleaner please try to not have the cleaner there when the nanny is, as this is another person who the nanny would then be in contact with, who may well have been in contact with other people in other homes.

At all times the government guidelines should also be followed eg mixing of households, social distancing etc.

Thanks for this. Its going to be difficult in practical terms to apply all this guidance. I know it would be ideal to follow it all but if the home only has 1 bathroom for example its going to be a challenge. Will employers or nannies still be covered by liability insurance even if they cannot follow all the guidance, does anyone know?

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/05/2020 10:40

I think it’s best to try and follow what you can

Obv with one loo then wipe down area before /after

Own towel - colours work well or nanny remover here and in a bag

Tbh if working in a home 10+ hrs a day if one of you get c the others prob will

Thi saying that. My neighbour had c really bad in March. 3w if illness

Yet hubby and twins daughterS in 20’s didn’t
