Childcare in the Time of Covid

DH and I are both teachers (both Dep Heads). We normally rely on lovely Grandma who takes our DS to school every morning and picks him up, gives him tea, bath etc (I know how lucky we are!). Things all changed now as we are staying away from Grandma to protect her. At the moment we are both in school every day working with vulnerable and key worker children and DS is attending the provision in his school. We have long commutes but working this out thanks to the fact our respective bosses get the current struggle...but...I'm worried about the fact that this could carry on indefinitely. If Grandma has to keep self-isolating, we are going to need to come up with a plan in September. Is it possible to hire an au pair (or someone?) who would come round to our house at 6.45am ish and take DS to school and then pick him up and bring him home and look after him until about 7.30-ish when we get home. Where do you even start looking for someone like this? And what do you reckon this would cost? TIA

Live-out nanny. Not an au-pair, as that would be someone staying with you in your home.

Latest GovUk Coronavirus FAQ - What you can and can't do has a section (section 12) about someone paid to care for a child at the child's home. So is possible to do now and thus should be possible later on.

Cost of a nanny varies. 06:45 may not be that attractive a start time so you may need to pay a bit extra to make it more attractive.

You will have employer duties, which typically means running a PAYE scheme, paying Employers National Insurance and providing a pension scheme. Mumsnet: Nannies may be a useful board to read.

Or they could get an au pair due to early start ,ideally a live in child carer would be better

Unless can find a very local annny

Tho many don’t like before and after school jobs as not enough hours

An au pair could work 645/9 and pick up from school till you are home 330/7

Not sure on au pairs costings now - but guessing £120 a week plus some will pay for English classes to do daytime

Some childminders open at 6.30 to 8pm
