Hiring a new nanny during the coronavirus

LSIO · 08/04/2020 10:45

Hi all, my old nanny deliberately broke lockdown rules and is not isolating with her friends for 14 days. Due to breakdown of trust I'm not planning to have her back.

I'm a single mum and currently working from home, I've found a new nanny willing to start as soon as possible however I'm worried how will I do it with the current coronavirus pandemic? (in case she is asymptomatic, etc)

How do you know that the new nanny isn’t following lockdown rules, she may say she is and may say she’ll self isolate for 14 days prior to starting with you, but there’s nothing to stop her from lying to you.
Your in no better position hiring a new nanny over the old one in this case.

MissBattleaxe · 08/04/2020 13:23

I think it's a very bad time to be hiring anyone. I can see you're a single Mum and you may not have a lot of choices, but can your employer cut you some slack right now? These are not ordinary circumstances.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/04/2020 13:26

Did your old nanny have symptoms?

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 13:29

You aren't supposed to mix households, you need to look after your own child.
You need to tell your employer I'm sure you are allowed time off if you have a child and no childcare.
Has the nanny been working for you since lockdown as this is illegal unless she is part of your household.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/04/2020 13:43

No it’s not illegal as a nanny is going to their place of work.

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 14:08

Aw, so you can mix households. You see this isn't clear at all.
If it's to stop the spread of the virus it should apply to everyone.
I've not seen my granddaughter in weeks, because of lockdown, I'm going if nannies can still house swop.

Blondeshavemorefun · 08/04/2020 14:21

Sorry nanny let your down

Yes a nanny can go to work as can’t work from home

Hope she can be trusted

LSIO · 08/04/2020 15:10

She didn't have symptoms but her friends (to which she went to) are also nannies of different households and one of those households is a key worker (a doctor I think). that is why I was against the idea of her visiting her friends but she didn't listen

She is a stay in nanny so she lives with me.

Ok, so if she lives with you she shouldn't be mixing with other households , I do feel a bit sorry for her though having to isolate at her workplace but understand your concerns. Trouble is the new nanny may or may not have been self isolating, even if she has she has may well have been within another family or have picked it up whilst visiting a supermarket etc so in terms of virus control you might not be much better off. But if its a trust issue then i think you have to give your existing nanny reasonable notice, she lives with you so will need time to find new accomodation, which will probably be difficult.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/04/2020 17:34

@Devlesko don’t be ridiculous a nanny is going to work not a social visit! I really hope you are joking.
Going to a place of work is not mixing households.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/04/2020 17:35

Although in this case the nanny was already living there.

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 17:51

Had a lovely afternoon, lots of kids mixing at their neighbours.
I don't think nannies are exempt from catching the virus anymore than anyone else.
I did work anyway, I cred for gd whilst ds1 was working and dil got a break.
I can't believe people are allowed to mix houses whilst others can't.
nannies are hardly Key workers, they serve the individual, not the general public.
So shoot me, I've been in for more than a month and so have they.

MyDcAreMarvel · 08/04/2020 18:21

No you did not work! You are incredibly selfish and stupid!
Nannies are not exempt from catching the virus but people are allowed to go to their place of employment as is anyone.
Your behaviour is appalling and you should be ashamed of yourself.

Namesgonenow · 08/04/2020 18:24

@Devlesko be ashamed of yourself.

Devlesko · 08/04/2020 21:59

Oh, ffs come on. I'm all for keeping safe and if there was any risk to anybody no way would I have gone.
We were on lockdown about 6 weeks ago, all of us.
Just a different house.

Hugglespuffed · 10/04/2020 09:20

And this. Yes this is exactly the reason why we are going to be in this mess for so much longer. Because people do not follow the rules. Goodness me. We ALL miss our family and friends, but the rules are rules.
A nanny going to work is different, it should be discussed how vital it is that they come in. A grandparent visiting a grandchild is NOT essential. How hard is it to follow the rules? You're just extending things to last longer.

Advice on hiring a Nanny for the first time...

We currently have an 18 month old boy and have a baby girl due in August. We are moving to Putney in a months time and are looking to hire a Nanny for around 20 hours a week for a long term position. We have looked at agency’s but the fee is £1,900 - £2,500 just to place which is a hefty chunk. Can anyone recommend another way to find a good nanny with experience please that they found worked? Many thanks 😊

Florencemattell · 14/05/2020 13:43

Childcare UK but set an account up. Local mums Facebook Group. Ensure you check DBS is up to date, that they have permission to work in the UK. Ring and speak to at least two referees. You will need to weed out alot of unsuitable applications ones that dont fit your family style. If you have not had a nanny before I would strongly advice you to use a good agency. They can advice if you are paying the correct rate, contract, nanny duties etc.

nannynick · 14/05/2020 14:00

@Brag1234 I have got all my work since 2017 via Childcare.co.uk and some temp work by being on local Facebook groups.

So Facebook and ChildcareCoUk listing (paid membership, monthly is around £30 I think).

Nanny payroll companies like NannyPaye, PayeForNannies, Way2Paye will help with doing contract and the finance related things like producing payslips, setting up a workplace pension scheme, reminding you how much to pay HMRC. You can do these things yourself if you feel so inclined... payroll software from BrightPay starts from £49 for example, or PAYE Basic Tools I think is still available from HMRC.
