Coronavirus & nanny

Another Coronavirus thread (sorry)!

I currently have a wonderful nanny who looks after my toddler DD. However, I am also pregnant and therefore according to the government advice supposed to be self isolating. Thankfully I can WFH. However, our nanny travels by tube to get here and I obviously (and rightly) have no control over what she does at the evening or weekends with regards socialising.

What are others in this situation doing? Is your nanny still coming to work? Or have you asked her not to come and are splitting childcare with DH if he is also WFH?

Thanks!

erefore according to the government advice supposed to be self isolating

No, you aren't. You are supposed to be diligent in following social distancing measures, which is not the same as self isolating.

Ok thanks, I'm clearly not up to date on the correct terminology!!

However, is having a nanny in my house not pretty similar to having gatherings with friends and family which they say to avoid? Or is it a numbers thing?

I might not have her coming in but obviously you have to pay her anyway.

Thanks - yes, I do realise that. It's more working out how risky it is, as ideally I'd like her to continue. So am interested in what others in similar situations are doing.

I'm also pregnant and we are keeping our nanny. 121 contact between one well child and one well adult seems safer than being in school.

If you are WFH can’t you stay in a different part of the house and have her spray some Dettol around before she leaves (if you can bloody get any!)

blueberryyoghurt · 18/03/2020 14:19

@fairybatman, yes that's a good idea, thanks! I guess my my main concern is she passes it to my DC and then DC to me. But I think I'm over thinking it?!!!

I think it’s a fair question. I’m facing a similar dilemma with whether to continue my nanny. I can work from home but as a single mum with a 2 and 4 year old and zero family support, these nanny hours are nothing short of a lifeline for me, but risky as I have autoimmune disease. I’m considering suggesting halving her hours temporarily during the worst of the crisis - that way she can find other work on that day (and I’m sure there will be at least some people desperate for temporary childcare now schools have closed), and I would be better able to afford to keep paying her even if I didn’t want her to come in some weeks eg in self isolating / lockdown.

blueberry I'm in the same boat. I'm due next Friday snd nanny comes on a Monday and Friday. Really need the extra help as husband WFH and he's super busy and it's difficult being indoors all the time with a toddler and being so heavily pregnant. But I'm worried in case she passes it on to DD and I get it when so close to giving birth. She's a family member so I know she's being super careful but she lives with other family members who are still working and she looks after other children who have only just stopped going to school.

We’re keeping our nanny on even though she’s not working for us as we’re not in our family home during Covid. our jobs are unaffected by Covid so we’re fortunate so don’t want nanny to be out of pocket or in a precarious position. We might act differently if our jobs had been affected as many have.

I think if you are being paid then nice to give nanny time off paid

Tho now government are saying rent will pay 80% of employed wages

Still waiting to see what self employed get .....
