Nanny Ofsted inspection

Evening! I've had a call to say I'm being inspected by Ofsted in a few weeks time. The inspector says she will need to see my safeguarding policy and my complaints procedure - is this normal? Been registered for 12ish years and inspected once before, last time they just asked me verbally "what would you do in xyz situation" and not once has it been communicated to me that I needed a written policy!

No, the inspector is wrong.
I would immediately contact Ofsted saying you need to urgently speak to an inspection team manager - Ofsted inspectors have been trained in this numerous times and MUST NOT request things from nannies that are not part of the inspection criteria.

Has the inspector given you their contact number - if so call them and tell them you are a Nanny and they must not request written policies from you. They should check with their TM before they carry out an inspection or they can call Wendy Ratcliff at Ofsted and check with her personally!

If they get arsey then refuse to proceed - request to be put in contact with Complaints Investigation Enforcement team and put in a complaint about the inspector.

It really annoys me - can you tell - that Ofsted are still using inspectors who don't know what they are doing. Wendy has issued numerous reminders to inspectors about this.

Do they think you are a childminder?

Nannies register on the volunteer Ofsted register .... Its only so you can become Ofsted registered to claim tax credits.
Or thats how ot use to be anyway.

Never been Ofsted checked and never known any other nannies to be either

You can tweet Wendy. She would love to know about inspectors who are overstepping their remit.

Wendy has said inspectors will be reminded about nannies not needing written policies & procedures.

Thanks @nannynick I've replied to your tweet. She initially thought I was @DecemberSnow and I did correct her. Apparently she's confirming my appointment today so I shall feed this back to her and see what she says.

Not all childminders need policies either (although I'm not registered now) you had to say what you'd do in situations.

Hey there,
I'm a nanny and have been checked by OFSTED twice.
The whole thing was pretty much a joke as the binder that both women brought with them was designed for a child minders set up. Asking me questions about did I have safety glass on patio doors, have I fitted stair gates, do I have a first aid book, are all electrical cables tidied away etc. To each question my basic response was 'it's my bosses house so I've advised them but it's up to them what they decide is safe or how they want their house to look'
The only questions relevant to nannying that I can remember where talking about a balanced diet for the children, how I divided my time between children of different ages and provided for their needs and also what would I do if I thought the children were being abused.
Out of the binder of numerous questions I think only five could be answered that were relevant. Until OFSTED come up with some more nannying based questions it really is a waste of time as we are in our bosses homes under their rules and as a nanny you don't even have to be registered with OFSTED.
The funny thing is the woman wasn't allowed into my bosses house until she saw the proof of written acceptance letter they had sent ahead. It was like she was a vampire who couldn't cross the door 😆

Thank you, I got email confirmation from Ofsted today that I don't need to have any written policies so I'll be printing that out and showing it to her!

I have a friend that’s a nanny and all she was asked was about the planned escape route if there was a fire!!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 15/03/2020 16:28

Here's a link with a checklist to show the difference on what is required for a childminder vs a nanny. Shocked that inspectors wouldn't know this.

If you have an inspection and the inspector does anything that is not part of the nanny inspection, tell the inspector you are not happy and you want them to check with their TM before proceeding. If they continue, ask to speak to their TM, or to Wendy Ratcliff (the inspector should know how to contact her). If they continue then reiterate to them that you are not happy and put in a written complaint immediately.

The Quality Assurance team at Ofsted are aware that some inspectors overstep their remit so by putting in a complaint immediately you will get the case looked at my a senior inspector. This has been an ongoing issue for the last 2 years and Ofsted management are aware and have retrained staff several times.

Complaining about your inspection does not affect the outcome of your inspection, it helps to flag it for the attention of the management team.

Unfortunately Ofsted is not able to assign a team of inspectors to just inspect nannies, so the inspectors inspect various types of provision and do sometimes forget that a nanny is not a childminder. www.gov.uk/complain-ofsted-report

Thanks, I'll follow this should I need to. I would be very surprised if she comes on Thursday as it is!

Wow big difference but Childminder’s have to run in line with all government under 5 nurseries facilities ,so that involves a lot of policies and guidelines to follow and adhere to . Nannies are totally different . Also a Childminder’s are self employed and nannies are not.
