My sad x-nanny. I wish she could come back.

I spoke to our x-nanny last night. She left us at the end of June because her visa here was up (she is Canadian). She is very unhappy and I just wish she could come back to London. We have a new nanny with whom we are happy. So she couldn't work for us, but I do wish there was some way for her to come back.

She got the job through an agency here in London. Both the mum and the agency said it was sole charge. But, the mum is a complete control freak and is always looking over her shoulder. She even told my lovely nanny she was changing the nappy wrong and told her how to do it. My lovely x-nanny is perfectly capable of changing a nappy on her own!

So, I know it's probably impossible but does anyone know if there is any way for her to come back to England to work? I think she could get in on a student visa, but then she'd have to go to school which would reduced the hours she could work. I think there is a domestic workers visa, but I think that is for people moving to the UK who want to bring an existing employee with them.

Any ideas? I so wish I could help her!

Eleusis, I'm afraid I don't know the answer in relation to Canada but I'm sending your x-nanny lots of sympathy. We've investigated all the options in relation to our wonderful South African nanny whose visa expires at the end of November, including her returning home and coming back via a new visa, but there's nothing available apart from her marrying her boyfriend who has an EU passport, but unfortunately they're not up for that option! It's such a complete bummer, when someone is willing to work and is paying tax, NI etc and is enabling two other people to throw armfuls of tax to the government. Sorry - my own current pet hobbyhorse (as I hunt for a new nanny which is currently being tricky). I shall be following this thread closely in case anyone comes up with any genius ideas we haven't yet thought of...

I've just worked out that she could get a working holiday visa into Ireland and then come over here and work for cash in hand.

Or maybe she could work in Ireland... I'll suggest it to her.

Hi

Sorry for hijacking this thread a bit, but in response to Furzella, i married my South African boyfriend of 4 years, and yesterday he got refused a visa to enter the UK. So even marrying someone doesnt work

Eleusis, if she is under 30 she can get as many working holday visas as she wants

eleusis · 28/08/2007 09:46

What do you mean she can get as many as she wants? She is 23, but I think it's a one time deal. Or do you mean into different countries within the EU?

eleusis · 28/08/2007 09:47

Oh, and how horrible that your husband has been refused entry. Are you appealing?

Furzella · 28/08/2007 09:52

Anyoneoutthere, you poor thing, what a horrendous situation. I hope it gets resolved quickly. Much sympathy.

anyoneoutthere · 28/08/2007 10:04

Hi

You are entitled to as many working holiday visas as you want - as long as you meet the criteria every time (and there are always ways around things)

Yes he is appealing his visa decision today - its so difficult when we know that we are legitamate, yet loads of people arent

eleusis · 28/08/2007 10:36

But, if you can just get another one, what is the point of restricting the work time to 12 months?

OP posts:
anyoneoutthere · 28/08/2007 10:46

I suppose its to control how many foreign people are working. But again, there are always ways around it.

CAT me if you need to know more!

just saw this post- I work in recruitment and would like to stress that you can only ever apply for ONE working holiday visa. I have heard of the very occasional lucky punter who has applied a 2nd time and managed to slip through the net and have it accepted, but that would only ever happen if the visa office makes a mistake in process.

Have you checked to see if she is eligible for a highly skilled migrant visa? if she holds a degree and has worked full time for the past year she may well be able to get one of those- let me know if you require more info.

Squiffy · 28/08/2007 13:00

My kiwi flatmate got kicked out of the UK after using up just about every route going....two weeks later she was back in UK and working at her old job, using a German Visa - all above board - thanks to a good lawyer who pointed her in the right direction. This was years ago, mind so I'm not sure if still allowed (but don't see why not).

And Eleusis, if she does look like coming back, let me know.... we have a fabulous new nanny now, but she is planning at some point to relocate to Manchester to live with her boyfriend once they have saved up enough money (early 2008 by the look of things), so we will definately be hunting again at some point...

anyoneoutthere · 28/08/2007 13:36

If you come from a Commonwealth country you can go to another Commonwealth country. The amount of times you get a working holiday visa is unlimited so long as you fulfill the criteria

eleusis · 28/08/2007 14:27

She doesn't qualify as a skilled worker.

Squiffy, she's handing in her notice pretty soon, like in Sept./Oct. so I'm pretty sure your nanny won't have run off just yet.

If anyone knows of someone who could/would sponsor her into the country she would love to come back.

I sent her an e-mail earlier suggesting she might want to try out Ireland for a year.

I kept telling her to find a man and marry him while she was here but she wouldn't listen.

Things are looking up. I sent her an e-mail and told her about some more EU countries where she can apply for holiday maker visas (Ireland, France, Germany, etc.) and she said she was interested in Ireland. So, maybe she'll find a nice family to go work for. And she'll be close enough to come visit us.

That will be so good for your nanny if Ireland works out... fingers crossed.

Yes, our nanny is planning to be around for a while longer, and I am so in love with her it isn't true. I will be sad when she goes to Manchester - she looked after my DS when he was a baby in nursery and she loves him to bits, and she's taken my DD to her mum's house for tea so DD is getting spoilt rotten as well (her mum and dad run the local vet's practice where our dog goes, and her dad drinks in our local with DH, and is best friends with Henry, who owns the fruit farm which we live in the middle of: it is SO incestuous). It will be tears when she leaves next year.

eleusis · 29/08/2007 08:58

You live in the middle of a fruit farm?

Squiffy · 29/08/2007 09:09

200 acres of the stuff. We really lowered the tone of the neighbourhood when we moved in, especially when we stuck a jacuzzi in the garden (though the window cleaner likes it - he's a 70 year old and very well-to-do retired civil servant who never got married and he house-sits when we go on holiday; apparantly when he's house-sitting he tries to persuade all the local ladies to come have a soak with him...

eleusis · 29/08/2007 09:21

That sounds great. I'm coming to visit. Can I pick the fruit from the trees? And can DD climb the trees?

OP posts:
Squiffy · 29/08/2007 09:41

Yes, but try to avoid the pheasant shooters....

seriously we are really lucky and live in rural heaven, except when it snows and we get stuck there for days! The best bit is that we are opposite an estate that holds concerts in the summer - classical and pop. We sat in the garden listening to the Happy Mondays & Supergrass playing live the other day...

Mind you DH and I are slaves to the city in order to finance it all...

mishmash · 29/08/2007 21:42

Eleusis - only that I have moved onto the aupair stage I would have taken her no problem because I know how happy you were with her
