Hello- I'm looking for some advice/opinions :-)
My husband and I have just moved back to Glasgow (Giffnock) after 20 years away in England with our 1&3 year old. I will be applying for funded childcare for the eldest - any views on the local family centre (Glenwood) or the local nurseries? I'm hoping to get back to work part time when we've settled in the new house but not sure the hours of family centres suit working or they won't take under 3s so I'd have to drop the youngest off at a private nursery anyway 🙈 thanks!

There is also Glen family centre. Which is in Giffnock/thornliebank and is an East Renfrewshire family centre, all East Ren family centres are open all year round and 8am until 6pm. I am sure Glen family centre take babies. You could also use childminders. There are lots of childminders in East Renfrewshire.

Thanks- what's the difference between a family centre and private nursery?

You would get more replies in Scotsnet. Ask MN to move it for you.

Starlight188 · 27/12/2019 19:55

Thanks- I didn't know there was a scotnet! Smile

East Renfrewshire council run nurseries which are usually attached to a primary school and they also run family centres. The only difference I know of between their nurseries and family centres are that nurseries are only open term time (though you can send your child to a family centre during the school holiday period) and family centres are open all year round.

East Ren only charge £2.20 an hour per child for any hours over your free entitlement. Whereas private nurseries will charge much more than £2.20 an hour because they can't run at a loss.

Private nurseries which are owned privately.

Thanks that's really helpful- that's good to know that family centres could do holiday cover for the school nursery

Starlight - if you look up Scottish families information services, then key in your post code. All local nurseries will come up with the closest to you first.

All your local authority nurseries/family centres are very good. In East Ren there is little difference between any of them.

I don't know much about private nurseries to you so couldn't recommend any. All private nurseries, play groups, childminders follow the national curriculum guidance and policies too.

Hi. I know of people who have sent their children to Glenwood and they have been really happy with it. Another option for your older child is the outdoor nursery. My youngest went there when they turned 3yrs and it was a fantastic experience for them. Would highly recommend...and I think you can now use funding to cover some (if not all?) of the cost.

Thanks weejenny! What is the outdoor nursery called?
