What should I charge for proxy parenting?

For a 6 year old. He'll be at school during the day but his parents will be abroad so I'll have 'responsibility' for him still with overnights. After school on Monday - midday Thursday. It's a one off booking, not a regular family. What should I charge?

Your usual rate? I get that it seems like more responsibility, but you'll be asleep for a lot of it.

But my usual rate is £10ph, so am I charging while he's at school and/or asleep? What's the norm?

His parents are going to a funeral so I don't want to take the piss. On the other hand I'll probably be pretty tired for my day job so don't want to give my services away.

Good question and will watch with interest. There's been other posts on here previously with the same question and answers varied. Some said normal rate up until 11pm and then a set overnight fee or half the hourly rate overnight whilst child is asleep but full rate if they're up in the night.

Day job... will you still be able to do that job? What if school is closed or if he is ill?

Overnight care is a lot of responsibility, anything can happen - mostly children vomiting by my experience - so you may not get an undisturbed sleep and it won't be the same as sleeping at home. A reduced rate 12pm-6am perhaps you may want to consider but I would not drop that too much.

We generally pay £200 per 24 hours for a toddler £10 ph during day flat rate £50 overnight but in your case I might be tempted to lower it for a child at school all day. £500 for the period?

CircleofWillis · 07/11/2019 23:44

As it is a funeral I would just charge for hours you are there. Hourly rate plus overnight fee. However in a different situation I would also add a charge for 'responsibility' during school hours or have an agreement for pay if you have to do extra during school hours.

Don't try to combine this with a day-job while the child is at school. That's crazy. You would be effectively on-duty 24h/day for days.

Usually One would charge the daily rate as usual then half the daily rate per night.
If you get £100 per day then it's £150.

I've been a nanny for almost 30yrs and I follow the guidelines of the nanny agencies I am with.
