Now my own DCs are getting older and won't necessarily need me to take them to school and be at home after school, I'm thinking I could perhaps do something like provide emergency cover for nurseries, or nanny temping. Has anyone else got experience of this and what sort of qualifications did they need - I'm thinking it may not be worth doing the home-based childcare diploma in this case (I only have the ICP at the moment).

I am currently doing NVQ Children's care learning and development as I thought that the DHC didn't offer much scope for branching out career wise in the future if I wanted to, quite fancy children's centre work when ds is about 7.

A childminder in my area has just stopped minding to be bank nursery staff, good rates and demand for it in my area. Why not give your local early years team a ring, they will know more.

I've temped at nurseries, covering for staff sickness for example. You need a Level 3 childcare qualification, valid Early Years First Aid certificate and a recent Enhanced CRB check. Work can be obtained through agencies, who employ you. The agency will often be able to sort out getting a new CRB check (as one is needed when changing jobs) plus provide details of a first aid course (you need to repeat the training every 3 years). The agency I worked for also did other training for staff, such as Manual Handling, Child Protection. Pay in my area is typically £8 per hour gross.
I would not have thought that a home-based childcare course would be suitable for working in a nursery... though of course come two years time (once you have completed a Level 3 course), what Ofsted will and won't accept could easily have changed.

Thank you both, that's useful.
