Nanny birthday gift

Our new nanny started a month ago. She’s wonderful with our DC, as well as with keeping everything running smoothly and making their meals etc. It’s her birthday next week. I wondered if anyone has a great gift suggestion? I don’t know her very well personally yet, but would love to give her a nice gift.

She’s working the day before her birthday, so I thought I could bake a cake with DC and decorate the house with balloons etc as a surprise. How much is appropriate to spend on a present?

Well Iook after children and the best gift I've ever been given by parents is a taster box from theetter box bakery, cinema tickets for me and my partner with snacks included, and a voucher for a restaurant is always nice.

The very best gift I could think of though would be one paid day off 😂. That would take quite a bit of planning for what I do though.

The letter box bakery one isnt expensive (I looked it up to order more).

Do you not get paid holiday drogos? My nanny does.

I probably spend about £50 on my nanny's birthday present and get her stuff I know she likes - her favourite perfume, stuff for her cooking, etc. I would probably have a poke about on notonthehighstreet for some cool gift/subscription boxes if you don't know her very well yet. E.g. if she likes coffee, a coffee gift subscription will get her a new coffee to try every month.

We gave vouchers, something from the kids and tried to accommodate a day off.

CmdrCressidaDuck, no I'm self employed. Only time I ever take a day of is if my kids are very sick, even then I usually offer to work and the offer is usually accepted.

I'd go with a voucher-whatever you happy to spend. £25 maybe.

Iggly · 19/08/2019 23:01

@Drogosnextwife are you a nanny? Self employed makes no sense.

Some things that I've received over the years that I've really appreciated are;

  • a lovely bunch of flowers (was lovely just because no-one else ever buys them for me!)
  • extra money in the kitty purse to go out for lunch or coffee with my charges on my birthday
  • a voucher for an outdoors shop (I love camping and hiking - it shows that they thought about what I would really like rather just a generic m+s or John Lewis voucher)
  • cinema or theatre vouchers
  • a cake to celebrate with the children
  • a personalised mug to keep in the cupboard at work and some nice ground coffee

No I'm a childminder. I'm always worried it may put people off using the service if I take paid holidays.

Just don't get her what one of my nanny families got me ! I had been working with them a month when it was my birthday. (Very experiences prior to this) absolutely loved the child but mum was a first time mum and she decided to get me a book titled something along the lines of how to be the best nanny - like the dummy books (nannying for dummies etc) I was polite but was a bit like wtf! Her husband apologised and gave me a card with £50 in. I only stayed there a year as the mums expectations were ridiculous (she was from another country where the nanny would be more of a maid/slave type!) dad was lovely tho!
