I have 2 dc in nursery and pay £1300 a month for both of them (four days). Go on, beat that and make me feel better

Now the youngest are at school we don't have a nanny except part time but do have 5 lots of school and university fees on top, total about £55k a year out of taxed income.

When we had our third child we had a full time day nanny plus morning nursery school fees. Then at one point for the twins full time day nanny plus 3 sets of school fees. If you get used to paying a nanny then school fees are not that much of a shock as they're about the same or less (for 2 children).

Am the other side being a CM, and by invoices this month for a 5 day week 7.32-4.30 was 658.17, we are in Dorset.

MABS · 05/08/2007 18:23

2 sets of private school fees - one 15k per year, one £12k

scienceteacher · 05/08/2007 18:25

5 in private school plus and aupair.....you don't want to know

scienceteacher · 05/08/2007 18:28

Our costs are about 55k also, Xenia. I'm hoping it will drop when DS1 goes to Uni.

alibubbles · 05/08/2007 21:52

shosh, I would charge £1140 for 4 weeks for those hours , but that is the going rate round here. I mentor new childminders who would charge more than that!

cazzybabs · 05/08/2007 21:55

I have 1 child in private school - my choice, but as I work there I do get free after school care to ofset the cost of the fees and 1 at nusery (soon to be 2 at nursery)

so....1 child at private school - £900 a term (with staff reduction) and nursery £700 a month.

When I had both dds at nursery it was about £1500 - about £300 more than my net salary!

Judy1234 · 05/08/2007 22:15

Depends how you decide to fund university I think. Mine didn't drop - still £10k per child which was the day school fees because I paid the fees and I paid their rent and also keep so they didn't have any student loan but it can drop a lot if they take on the debt and/or live at home.

MightyMoosh · 06/08/2007 13:40

Wow I cant believe how much parents spend on childcare! At the nursery I used to work at we occasionally got parents complaining about costs but we did it day by day, you could cancel up to 24 hours before and not lose money I think thats good? Also open 8.30am-5.30pm and 7.15pm-10.15pm every day except sunday was 8.30am-1pm and the evening.

Now as a nanny I get £300 net per week, and all food costs but to be honest I mostly buy my own stuff as I feel guilty! I'm definatly the picnic in a park rather than eat in a cafe kind of nanny, just the way I was raised I guess. How much does everyone pay for babysitters? I'm in Richmond, not central London. Oh and the £300 is for 2 toddlers and soon a newborn, and I work weekends and have 2 weekdays off so I earn my money!

eleusis · 06/08/2007 14:36

Hey, mighty, can I be nosey and ask you how old your charges are? I have a 2 and 4 year old who spend much of their time in Twickenham. My nanny usually hangs out with some of the mums from school, but she might like to know more nannies. Just wondered if you could recommend where some nannies in and around Twickenham hang out?

MightyMoosh · 06/08/2007 14:49

I'll be in St. Margerets, between Richmond and Twickenham. I start this weekend, so cant say yet where the nannies are. All I've seen so far is the gymboree by the station, on my trial day. But I am hoping to meet people, and kiddies! My charges will be b/16m and b/3y and soon a baby.

eleusis · 06/08/2007 15:15

Oh, you are going to be busy! I think you can find some activities at St. Stephens church, not sure about times though. And, MArble Hill is a good picnic spot.

Good luck with the new job.

knakered · 06/08/2007 16:06

Just done the sums for next year - with my £5k/month school fees and nanny outgoings...need to earn £92K...or £7700/month pre tax...only for one year though - hopefully oldest will get 11+ and might be able to get back to au pair as the baby will be going to nursery and I can drop down to PT...so year after next will be only £22k school fees and 3K au pair...so only 2K a month so will only have to earn £48K/year to fund that liitle lot

lol at the way this thread has become a veiled way of comparing how rich everyone is. Why don't you post your salaries, postcodes and the make/model of your family car/s and have done with it?

eleusis · 06/08/2007 21:19

Did you know you can fit a boat in Jura's kitchen?

vixma · 06/08/2007 21:22

Intresting, is a nanny or childminder cheaper?

vixma · 06/08/2007 21:31

Putting it nicely....wholly cow, I charge £7.00 an hour and I have 13 years experiance and references etc....that is alot of money you guys talk about and I am a little gobsmacked with how much you guys pay...not saying that your childcare is not awesome but blimey?...theyer your children, worth more than the world, but bloody hell!

Judy1234 · 06/08/2007 22:22

If you have three under 5s as we had at one point (and then later 5 children 2 needing day care and 3 needing after school care) a nanny is cheaper. The nanny below will be looking after 3 under 4 or 5 too. Nursery may be fine for one but 3 places particularly in London can be more expensive and more complex and may be not as nice for babies as the nanny at home.

Our most expensive time was full time nanny plus 3 sets of school fees I think although it may be the same as the £55k or whatever I pay now for the 5. But what else would you spend it on as a single person without children in your 40s? Drink? Drugs? Expensive shoes? I can't see the point of that.

lazyemma · 07/08/2007 09:15

"But what else would you spend it on as a single person without children in your 40s? Drink? Drugs? Expensive shoes? I can't see the point of that."

That's right Xenia. Because people who don't have children are just footloose and fancy-free, aren't they? Their existence is one expensively shod, drug-fuelled, expensively shod party. They don't know what responsibility is.

I'd love to quote this thread, especially your message, to some of my childfree friends. They'd have a fricking field day.
