What do you think will happen with APs after we leave EU?

So I have a new chap starting in September. He asked whether he needs a visa, I said no, existing rules will apply when he starts and although sadly it now looks inevitable that we leave the EU at the end of October, we can assume things will continue as they are for a transition period of around a year, as it would be too complicated to do anything else.

Secretly I worry slightly that if he travels home at Christmas, as I'm sure he will, he might have some difficulty coming back to the UK if they ask him then decide au pair status isn't valid anymore or something.

Clearly, au pair travel status is, quite rightly, not going to be at the top of anyone's agenda for sorting things out when we go, so I do wonder if there will be a period when either no one knows, or the whole thing grinds to a halt because they decide no one can au pair until they know what they're going to agree about it.

Shouldn't make any difference as long as you/he conform to the au-pair revelations.

Piano - in the UK there is no specific au pair visa (currently), so EU au pairs are subject to the same immigration/work regulations as all other EU citizens.

Echobelly - I have no idea, I suspect even if we leave without a deal there will have to be a transition period.

I’ve been wondering this too. Have been avoiding EU au pairs for this reason but it’s difficult to find au pairs willing to come from further adirldz

I asked here about experiences of outside-EU au pairs and the replies seemed to suggest it was so much trouble as to not be worth it

@BogglesGoggles, where are your au pairs coming from? I thought any au pair that comes on a student visa was restricted to working 10 hours only and needed to commit to 20 hours at a registered educational establishment?

BogglesGoggles · 30/07/2019 21:38

@roses2 we’ve been focusing on commonwealth countries for youth mobility visas. I don’t think you can have an au pair on student visas.

How do you guys feel in England? I am dual nationality so I have my English passport and a different EU passport so things will be the same for me. I can live anywhere. And I am currently not living in England. How does it feel for you guys? I am so interested. You have been able to travel to Europe indefinitely all your life and now you can't. Or does it feel fine, like the pros outweigh the cons? That the Uk might be stronger afterwards?

angell84 · 31/07/2019 21:23

Oh I just checked it there. The last time I read about it - it said that the UK will need visas to travel to Europe. Now, it says that they won't need visas to travel as long as The UK grant the EU nationals the same right. Is that right?

Echobelly · 01/08/2019 17:27

Yes, I'm pretty sure there won't be visas, it would just be too much of a pain for everyone - and everyone seems to have forgotten that we didn't have visas before free movement, the only difference when travelling was you used to get your passport stamped.

@angell84 - it feels pretty rotten here for most people. I think a lot of people who voted for Brexit are just kind of ignoring it. I am a remainer and while I don't think it's going to be the sort of acute disaster some are predicting, I think leaving is an awful, horrible idea that weakens the UK, in fact probably ends the UK because Scotland will go independent as a result of it. It's led by people deluded that we are still a massive world power and a manufacturing economy and that the world still works as a series of rival countries that work with or against one another, not as a deeply interconnected place based on people's capability to travel, not where they live.

I live in London and am well off, so we will probably be OK. Rural areas and smaller towns will suffer badly when we leave

I've found this which could work for APs

Echobelly · 15/08/2019 18:32

Thanks @DropOfffArtiste - that may come in handy.
