French nanny

Hi,
I interviewed a French nanny recently and while I still have some more candidates to interview, it suddenly dawned on me I have no idea about the legalities/visas/tax rules etc i need to check if I employ someone from the EU.

She says she’s allowed to work here, but has only been in the UK for 3 weeks. What sort of visa should she be on, if at all? Brexit is confusing the life out of me!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes, no problems at the moment (we haven’t left). You just need to keep a copy of her passport, she needs to apply for an NI number and you need to register as an employer with HMRC.

@underneaththeash thanks. First time ever employing a nanny and having a slight panic!

Smile I forgot, you also need public liability insurance, which you can also often get through your regular house insurance and a pension scheme (I'd get a payroll provider to make things easier).
