Hiring a nanny mid year

My nanny is pregnant and due in January. She wants to work until November.

I'm concerned about the availability of nannies halfway throughout the school year...don't many nannies finish in the summer?

I mean I know there will be some availability as families/nannies circumstances change, but I mean as a general rule....is it really difficult to find a nanny halfway through the year/are all the good ones taken?!

Would appreciate advice and experiences here. I live in South west London.

It’s common for nannies to switch jobs in August/September as children grow up and start school, but there are still loads available at other times. We recruited through an agency (eden) and had no trouble filling the role at a different time of year.

In any event not sure there’s much you can do here, your current nanny can decide when to work till.

Hi @TinselTimes yes I should have mentioned....there are potentially options with another temp nanny I have, and our current nanny is happy to share hours until she goes off (ie take reduced hours) so ideally I'd like to find someone to take reduced hours until November and then go full time.

So essentially I need to think about whether I look for someone to take reduced hours for a few months and then go full time when current nanny goes off, or just recruit for a November start.

Anyway I feel better after your message - maybe am overthinking!!!

I have started some jobs in Summer but I have started jobs in November and April. So I do not think there is a general rule that there are more jobs started in the Summer. I am currently looking for work and I am not finding a great deal of jobs available, so looks like I won't start a job this Summer, could be some months until I get a job.

You’re definitely over thinking it

Obviously your current ‘temp nanny’ would be the first one to ask
Or rule out

But beyond that I’d just look at a new FT nanny from Nov. Whether you start looking now or later is up to you, personally I’d wait until late August at the earliest. Only because the biggest risk is finding one, thinking you’re settled then them accepting another job over yours

Obviously you need to take into consideration that your current nanny might want to come back after M/L

I think on a general note there are a lot of nanny jobs starting in September and January. But there are always nannies looking for positions through out the year. I would wait until after the summer and then start placing ads out.

Ok that's great thanks very much everyone. I can relax a bit now, I'm sure I'll be able to find someone 👍🏼 appreciate you all sharing your advice! X

Def over thinking. Think in 20yrs if nannying I’ve started jobs in most months and shouldn’t be a problem
