When I was a nanny I did all school runs for my family. The parents only ever went to school for parents evening and assemblies. Very occasionally one of the parents would be able to take /pick up and the children got really excited about this.

With regards to what you will miss, In my experience, (I’m now a childminder, so have been standing at the same school gates for nearly 10 years), you will miss nothing. I used to have a few friends at school who I’d chat to at the gate, but found it could get really gossipy so am quite happy now to stand on my own and do the job I’m there for (collecting children).

My best advice is to have a bomb proof organisation system. Have some form of calendar that everyone can view and add too and every time you get a letter/email/text, make a note of the information on the calendar and then check often so you don’t miss anything.

I think dc do appreciate if parents can take or collect on the odd occasion, if you are able to build in a late start or early finish once a week/fortnight so you can do the school run, I think that’s nice for the child and means you actually meet their teachers and friends and have slightly more insight into their school life.

Thank you for sharing that point. I'm trying to decide our routine as mine starts reception in September. I'm trying to see if I can do the breakfast run 3 times a week as I definitely won't be able to pick them up.

I think going to the school is important if you can at least once a week as parents dont tend to invite or accept invitations from parents they havent met, you pick up things missed on letters, texts etc as schools put up last minute notices or parents discuss things, you get to have words with teachers and the children
love to see you or you to take.
