Hi.
I'm just at the start of my au pair hunt. I live quite rurally but there's an hourly bus service into town. I can't afford to buy, and also insure an extra car solely for her so thought I'd pay for the bus pass.
How much do you pay your au pairs, and is it cash in hand?

We pay £90 per week & nothing additional but we live very centrally so she can walk to the town, college, train station etc.

I live in London zone 2 and pay a total of £115/week broken down as follows:

  • £75/week pocket money
  • £15/week English school (local school is £20/week)
  • £25/week for 3 hours to clean the house. I clean 30% of the house each week and the au pair does 70%. I make it clear this is optional but I've never had an au pair not do this as they all like the extra money.
  • Overtime of £15/day if kids are sick & need to stay home
  • mobile sim card with unlimited UK calls, sms and 2gb data (£7.50/month)
  • 25 days paid holiday per year (at the same time we take holiday as I work full time & can't accommodate their dates of their own choosing) + bank holidays & week ends off etc

She doesn't cook, look after kids during holidays etc. She literally wakes them, gives them breakfast & dresses them, takes them to school & collects them in the afternoon - 25 hours per week. I get home 1 hour after they are back.

£90 per week, 1 child school age. No housework or cooking required. It is merely, wrap around care for school due to year long waiting list for any pre-after school clubs. We live within walking distance of every amenity required and we gave her a bike + helmet which she uses from time to time.

In London; £100 a week, pay them for travel costs if they have to use Oyster card to pick kids up from somewhere, £60 per day for the occasional full day to have kids the whole day (this only happens about 3-4 times in a six month au pairing arrangement), plus spending money for the day, or occasional money if we need them to babysit in the morning if we're staying elswhere overnight (probably about £30)
