Hi, I haven't been out very much and I'm new to this. I was wondering what the going rate for babysitting/childsitting is? I have a lady who is happy to look after my 9 month year old for a couple of hours a day, 3 times a week. I know and trust her and she has childcare experience. I live in Sheffield. I want to make sure I am paying the right amount. Thank you

Not in Sheffield so don't know costs there but I think your first thing is to determine if this is babysitting (occasional evening care typically between 6pm and 2am), occasional nanny (daytime care at your home) or something more permanent (part-time nanny caring for your child at your home).

How often it occurs and the amount of commitment required affects the employment status, which would effect your cost.

3 hours on 3 times a week on the same days most weeks would be more likely employment as a part-time nanny than as an ad-hoc babysitter.

If you want someone to come for 3 hours one week, then none the following week, then 6 hours the next week, then none for several weeks, then 9 hours the next week - so it constantly varies and the person doing it can say "no, can't do Tuesday next week but I could do Thursday is that of any use?" then it may be them offering you a service.

So I would determine that first as it would effect your legal responsibilities and thus your cost.

Then establish what costs other people in your area pay for that type of care. Then if you are providing a job you tell the childcarer how much you are paying, or if they are offering you a service then they tell you how much they charge for their service.

As a Nanny in Sheffield I am paid £11 gross an hour.
I am qualified and very experienced!

Thank you, so the plan was to have the same 3 hours, 3 times a weeks for 2 months. It will always be in the daytime. Thank you for you reply!

Yes, the lady I know is fully qualified in childcare too. So would £11 an hour be reasonable? That would be £66 pounds a week. Or do you think I should pay a little more because it is for 2 hours at a time? Thank you

The agency I use sometimes in London stipulates £9.50 an hour (agency fee is separate) but my regular beloved and extremely experienced sitter charges £12 an hour, which I am happy to pay as she is ace. I would say £9.50-11 would be about right

Thank you. I think I might do 10 pounds as it is in the middle of what you suggested. Plus I would rather pay a bit more to make sure my child is in safe hands. I'll suggest it too her and see what she says. Thank you you again
