Who has your child after school

I work part time doing three full days a week. I finish work at 6 pm and my partner finishes at 5:30 pm. I have no clue who is going to pick up our daughter from school when they finish at 3:30 pm. My MIL has her currently on my working days but she doesn’t drive and we live in a different borough to her, which is not easily accessed with public transport. What do other working parents do?? FYI, she won’t start school until next year

A combination of childminder, after school club and a friend (she watches mine after school one day, we watch hers after school another). It would probably be worthwhile seeing if the school has after school club attached.

After school club three days a week (not badly priced at £10 per session, but the dinner is absolute crap)

DS's school doesn't run a club but two nearby nurseries offer pick up for after school club kids. The one we use only requires booking and paying a week in advance and the other required a full terms dates.

After school club in the school.

Previously used an after school club but now have an au pair (we both work full time).

After school club.

Childminder. they get dumped there at 7.15 and picked up at 6. Thankfully not every day. School wraparound is only 8 until 5.30 so doesn't work for us.

After school club and then a bus back home. He's only 5 but he copes ok. It's a bus service operated by the school so I trust them implicitly.

Could you do 4 school days rather than 3 full days?

lorisparkle · 05/04/2019 07:39

We use the after school club. We are very lucky that it does good wraparound care and has 3-11 yr olds for breakfast club and after school club then in the day has the pre schoolers. It meant I could drop all 3 ds at the same place when ds3 turned 3. Unfortunately the hours are only 8 until 5.30 which make it a bit of a struggle

Breakfast and after school club.

I work full time, but my work has let me start earlier (at 8:30) and have a shorter lunch so I can leave at 4:30 to pick up DS from after school club.

It's a slog, but we make it work. I don't know if this could work for you, but when I am able (when DP is working early shifts and can pick him up from school) I work overtime, sometimes staying til 8 o'clock to accrue time which means I can leave at 2:15 to pick up DS from school.

It will be a mixture of grandparents and a childminder and I will be off one day a week.

I used after school club and there was also a brekkie club from 8 which we could book random days at in advance - after school was set in stone and you picked your days in July - this allowed them to plan staffing etc. You can usually get childcare vouchers via work which whilst salary sacrifice (doesn't count to pension) means you do get a tax free amount in vouchers saving 20%

Friends/neighbours it becomes more than a favour and can lead to difficulties if kids fall out etc

When she was at nursery 50% we used our childminder who did pick up and the rest of the day. She had been with her since she was 1
