Has anyone used an emergency nanny or is anyone an emergency nanny?

I'm exploring my options! I have pretty good childcare experience, DBS, current first aid, (out of date safeguarding - but a high standard of knowledge/practise before that) not sure if I'm going to register with ousted or not yet....

And I'm wondering about being an emergency nanny

What do I need to consider/think about? (I know I need insurance and I know where to source it)
Should I join an agency or just advertise (not sure I need anything too regular)

Is there a Tinies branch in your area, I would look at registering with them as then I think you get to access the My Family Care network (though MFC have recently been acquired by Bright Horizons so perhaps the process might change). There is also a form on the Emergency Childcare website to apply as a nanny - could fill that in as well.

Consider how far you are prepared to travel keeping in mind that it may be at very late notice.

I was talking to someone at the council locally who said they have massive problems with staff having 'sick' children or 'sick' childminders

I reckon I need between a day a week and 3 days a month but I wondered about offering just an hourly rate so enough for a meeting?

I was thinking, if you register with me in advance (with a fee) and I meet the child(ren) then bookings are at a lower rate cos it'll be easier if they 'know' me

With a higher rate if you just ring up the day before/on the day

Does the council have something for their staff where they get to contact a central number and get put in touch with childcare providers who are available? If so then register with that.

I'm available one day a week, I advertise on Childcare.co.uk and I've had no requests for last minute childcare. So you advertising directly is going to be tricky I think.

You could but you may want to have a minimum... you may not want to travel 30 minutes each way to work two hours.

I think that will just lower your income. Parents with luck once they know the service exists and have used it once, will reuse it when the need arises.

you are right about registering the family I reckon

I'm thinking I'll go with mm for insurance - not registering with ousted tho'

Have first aid, have updated dbs., have qualifications - I reckon I'll give it a go

I'll write something up this evening and pay for insurance after I've done some advertising

Rates?

An hourly amount plus travel with a minimum of 3 hours?

So I need a name....& a logo?
I can sort out policies (Payment, CP/safeguarding/meds/Equal ops/risk assessment)
Think about advertising (Nicks right it's going to be tough)
Insurance is easy
Facebook page or website? - Thinking facebook as it's more in your face

Yes. You need to consider what is worth your time or not. You can't really charge for your travel to/from the place of work but you should factor that in when deciding on the fees to charge, area you will travel to. Any travel you do with children is fully chargeable (such as school runs).

So I need a name....& a logo?
No, I don't think I would bother at first. You need to test the market and see if there is actually any demand.

Insurance is easy - is it? Have you talked to MM about what cover they can arrange given you are not going to be a nanny in the traditional sense. You are not a mobile creche. You are not a childminder. You are not a maternity nanny/nurse. So do they have a product which would provide sufficient cover?

Any large employers in the area who have their own HR department? Would they be interested in knowing about a flexible short notice childcare service for staff?

I’ve used it. In a previous role I had it as a perk and we used it for 2 days when our nanny had to unexpectedly take the time off and neither of us were able to cover. I think it was through emergencychildcare.co.uk

From memory they did the payroll and b

Thanks Binary & thanks Nick

When today started I was a bit rudderless, but I have pitched for 2 jobs (completely different to Nannyoing), set up an email address/facebook page and twitter

I feel very content with the new business idea and feel I have an actual chance of it working for me

I appreciate all the help even if I have gone off half cocked in the opposite direction - sorry

Can also advertise on local fb town groups

I’m admin on my local group for the nanny babysitting site

And often have people asking for one off childcare or 2/3 days following week due to illness /holidays etc
