Au pair & NI number

Just found out our au pair is applying for an NI number. Is this allowed / legal? She's Italian (if that matters).

Not had the chance to speak to her yet but I don't understand why she'd need one. Anyone share any insights? TIA.

Most of ours have applied for one, either because they want to get a second job or they're going to settle permanently in the UK. Another wanted to look into whether she could make voluntary NI payments (but I can't remember what happened with that.)

I'm quite relaxed if ours do get a second job as it really helps non-native speakers improve their language skills and stops native English speakers becoming bored. However, I make it clear that our family must come first and they need to provide me with a copy of one of their payslips, to show that they've declared it as second job. As long as they have declared it, you don't need to register as an employer.

My au pair said several of her au pair friends have applied as they are under the illusion this means they can stay after Brexit. I've advised mine this isn't correct...

One of my previous Au Pairs got an NI number. She told the NI people exactly her circumstances - that she was an Au Pair and received pocket money etc. She was Australian, here on a two year working visa, and wanted to get a 'proper' job after she finished her 6 months with us.
