What age would you recommend to put your baby in nursery?

Mine didn't go until the free hours at age 3

scottiesheep · 30/01/2019 11:06

Mine started at 13 months and took about a month to settle fully. He loves it now and doesn't want to leave when we collect him! He's come on leaps and bounds so it's been great for his development

Mine started at 12 months and settled really well. 3 settling in sessions. I did a phased return to work, using some of my accrued annual leave. I was FT but spent the first month doing 10-2 x 4 days p/w. DS has shorter days in nursery and I extended them by 1 hr per week to get him up to full time. I had Wednesday off with him so he started with only ever having 2 days in a row, then as my month ended it was Christmas. Loads of time off with him then back to nursery full time. All good.

Why are nurseries the only option? Its been shown that young children do better in smaller more homely settings.

QforCucumber · 31/01/2019 14:27

Each to their own, Mine went 3 full days a week at 8 months and we've never had an issue - he's almost 3 now. You do what you have to do.

needsleepzzz · 31/01/2019 14:28

Put my daughter in at 8 months, settled well after a couple of days, she's 2 now and still loves the place, has her best friends and is doing very well.

CookieSwirlC · 31/01/2019 14:30

Dd1 didn’t go until she was 3 for the free hours.

Dd2 went at 10 months.

Both were fine, dd1 took a long long time to settle but she got there in the end (and she is more highly strung than her little sister!)

caffeinebuzz · 31/01/2019 14:35

DD started at 12 months, she only does 2 days a week but settled in really quickly.

Vivv · 31/01/2019 14:54

Mine will be going full time at 6 months - needs must.

Also i firmly believe it will be good for them - socialisation and development

Of course i would love never have to use a nursery but I am the only one paying the mortgage and bills...i have to go back to work asap!

HSMMaCM · 31/01/2019 17:21

Look at nurseries and childminders and see which you like best.

Lazypuppy · 01/02/2019 21:56

My dd started at 10 months when i went back to work.

Was always the plan

stinkypoo · 01/02/2019 22:11

DD started at childminders when she was 7mo, until she started school. She started preschool at 2 as well, then it moved so she then started at nursery/preschool too until she started school

Justajot · 01/02/2019 22:21

If you can start before 7 months, I think they settle better because they don't get separation anxiety until 7-11 months. But that is based on my hazy memories of developmental psychology. it did work for my DDs.

amymel2016 · 01/02/2019 22:24

Mine started at 13 months (tried to get him in earlier but couldn’t due to waiting list) and does 3 full days (7.30-5.00). It’s been absolutely brilliant for him, his confidence has grown and he’s learnt so much.
