Hourly rate

I have been contacted by some one wanting a full-time live in Nanny/Housekeeper Cooking their meals, life admin, 7am-7pm so 60hrs per week, small baby sole charge in Chelsea. I have 20+ years experience. They are offering a weekly wage that works out at an hourly rate of £8-9.. This seems low? But I admit I haven't had a live in job since my 20s. Thanks in advance.

For live in that sounds ok to me - we pay our live our nanny/housekeeper £15 gross per hour so about £12 net, and she pays rent, commuting costs, bills, food etc from that. Sounds like you wouldn’t have much in the way of expenses?

PETRONELLAS · 22/01/2019 17:29

Only saw this as it’s in ‘active’ but that’s seriously low. You are skilled qualified experienced and it’s going to be an immersive demanding life.

Marylou62 · 22/01/2019 17:33

Sorry not to drip feed, but I have a family and a house so still pay mortgage and bills. Was going to go home at w/ends.

Ah if you’re still payingmortgage and Bills then yes that salary may not be enough for you. But tbh it still sounds about right for live in - it’s assumed when setting those salaries that the nanny doesn’t have a mortgage of their own and will live rent free.

So I guess you just negotiate with the family, based on your experience and ask for more. If they’re rich enough (Chelsea so they may be!) then maybe they’ll go for it. For us we couldn’t afford to pay more than that and absorb all the extra costs of another adult living with us.

Nannynick, Callaird , Blondes and all you other Nannies, please help me out.
I can't find a job local to me that has enough hours and after talking with my DH (kids now adults) we have decided that if possible I will work away in the week. This is also near my parents who are both quite poorly. But it has to be worth it. Thankyou

Personally I avoid live-in jobs, so not sure what help I can be.
Salaries in London vary quite a lot.
Either the pay is enough for you or it isn't, only you can decide that.

BinaryStar · 24/01/2019 19:46

For live in position that is perfectly normal wages. But may well not work for you

You may get the odd job that pays a lot more but will often by HNW and 24 our jobs. Look at the boards of some of the London nanny agencies like Imperial, Eden, Little ones. That will give you a steer on market rate.

Marylou62 · 24/01/2019 20:20

Thanks everyone..you are right only I can decide. I am conflicted. I need to earn some money, my present job is ending, I live 300 miles away so live-in is the only option really. I will see if I can negotiate a bit more as they seemed quite keen to have someone mature with my level of experience..If not then it's not meant to be. Thankyou

Whereabouts do you live? I really don't think commuting 300 miles (and 300 back!) every weekend would be practical! What are you qualified in? Are you a career nanny/housekeeper?

Marylou62 · 25/01/2019 19:21

I plan to only come back every other weekend (by train) and see parents and friends the other weekends in Surrey .. I am an x neonatal nurse who has nannied around the world.. So yes, a career nanny. But no jobs here.. All after school etc and not enough hours.. I have to have a think about it.. But am used to the travel as poorly parents so up and down A30/M5 lots already.. My DH of 29yrs is on board with it. He retires in 3 years so probably only do it till then.. Didn't want to say where I am in case future would-be employer on here, but I have said nothing derogatory.. Cornwall! As I am driving around country lanes I am thinking how different it would be..!

Ah, Cornwall! Yes, I feel your pain there. I'm also in Cornwall and have been struggling to find work since I finished with my last long term family 18 months ago! I've been surviving on the odd babysitting booking and temp jobs further afield. So stressed out and miserable with it! The trouble is I know I would be stressed out and miserable in an urban environment (ie, London, where all the Nanny jobs are!) too.

I always think the expectation for live in nannies to work 7-7, 5 or 6 days a week is cruel. Nobody can give their all working so flat out. The pay is appalling when you divide it by the hours. I suppose because they say if it's live-in you're not spending on rent or other bills, but that doesn't apply to you or me as we'd only be living in out of necessity! Unfortunately £450-500net is accepted as reasonable/generous pay for a 60 hour week, even in London.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/01/2019 14:42

Waves. Sorry just seen this - should have tagged me

Tricky. Your home location you won’t get many jobs

That wage is low as you will still have own housing bills to pay

The travelling to and from London May be too much and will dig into your salary

Callaird · 26/01/2019 20:55

@Marylou62 Is that net? (I do hope so!)

You should get more than that with your age and experience. I was working live in in Wimbledon until last summer and was getting £10.25 net (£13 gross) I did 49 hours a week contracted but rarely worked more that 45 and had a lot of extra holiday!

You will get more than £9 if you keep looking. Or just tell the agency that it’s not enough and see if the family come back with more.

Marylou62 · 27/01/2019 11:04

Thank you for your message.. Got me thinking whether net or not.. If net it is a better hourly rate. Mum got hold of me via childcare. Co. UK site.. Not agency. We have pencilled in another chat for next week. Still lots to think about.

Would you consider a job in Surrey? It would take longer to get home by train but you could fly back again, from Newquay to Gatwick, which I think is pretty straightforward if you just take hand luggage. You would be handy for your parents too. This family are only offering £500 gross but the hours are more reasonable, and you could always negotiate if they really connect with you.

Harmony at Home is a decent agency, not one of those scam ones.
