So baby number 2 is in the pipeline and I've just started with the good old money worries. We have a household income of about 55k with normal outgoings... im getting rid of my finance car and getting one bought outright so that will.be a big help, current child is in primary school and goes to both afterschool and breakfast club's costing 70 per week so when I go back to work our childcare will be eye watering 220 a week ....eek!!
Please share some positive thoughts and any money saving tips!!!

That's roughly what I pay for full time nursery for 1 child. You just need to cut back other things 🤷‍♀️

nannynick · 23/12/2018 12:17

As a nanny I can cost parents over £150 per day, so 220 sounds low cost to me. Childcare cost is relative, what is costly to some is low cost to others.

Selling your car and getting a cheaper one brought outright is a fantastic idea. Paying off any other debts is also a good idea... the less money you have leaving your account the better.

So do a cash flow plan/budget. Use debt snowball or debt avalanche methods to repay debts. Spend money on things you value - time together as a family, rather than stuff, I expect. Meal plan to help reduce waste.

Are you signed up for tax free childcare? It made a huge difference for us as it’s per child, so could use it on DS1’s after school and holiday club as well as on nursery .

DS2’s 30 hours funding kicks in next month. Our nursery bill will drop £650/month overnight.

Look at all the government schemes available. Even at 55k, you may find UC will pay towards your childcare costs, as they are high. It might not be much, but try a calculator. If not, you can get 20% paid by the governement in one of their schemes.

Thanks so much :) I haven't properly looked into tax free child care but I will! Gosh its so overwhelming !

Not helpful, but this is the reason I won't have any more children. I've done nursery at £1200pm and just the thought of returning to those days makes my ovaries shrivel up.

Babbabump · 24/12/2018 19:58

1200 a month 😬😬😬 eek !!! I think my ovaries have shrivelled at that 😂

55k is way above the average income. And far more than we have as a family of 4. Mayve list your outgoings and we might be able to see how you can cut back.
