Can I discriminate on age as a childminder in the UK ?

Where I’m from you couldn’t, if you had a place you couldn’t say who did or didn’t take it.
Can I say over 4 years only here in England please ? I wouldn’t discriminate on anything else by the way. It’s just not worth while unless I have 6 children

you can choose who you want to mind. you dont have to give a reason. its your business you can turn away work if you dont think its a good fit.

Fabulous thank you 🙏

There're childminders round here who only do before and after school care, so effectively older children. Slightly further afield there's a couple of cms that work for home educating families, but I guess that's pretty niche.

Her0utdoors - that’s what my plan is, my days of babies are long gone

I know the feeling 5fivestar, and I've never even concidered looking after anybodies except my own! Good luck Smile

Yes, if you don't register for early years foundation stage, you're only allowed to look after children from the term after their 5th birthday anyway.

But even if you're registered for younger ones, its your business, you can take on - or not - anyone you want.

Have you registered with OFSTED yet?

I plan to. Another strange question I want my unique selling point to be no babies ie your school age child will be doing STEM, homework, piano lessons, fun Spanish. No stepping over toddlers having trantrums which is exactly why we left our recent provider. Can I legally say that in an advert ?

Of course you can.

RicStar · 12/12/2018 12:52

Well I wouldn't go negative on toddlers but yes you can offer an after school only service. You will need a school with no / limited (by places or hours) / expensive after school club to pick up from.

DustOffYourHighestHopes · 12/12/2018 12:54

You can choose who to mind but if it’s to do with uk residency I’d say:

  • don’t put it in the advert
  • don’t give it as a reason.

Age of child is fine.

Thank you. I just want to pitch it correctly

You can say school children only. I only have pre schoolers and advertise that I'm not tied to school runs. State the positives of what you're offering.

My friend does before and after school club at her home and also holiday club.

If you advertise it as before, after school and school holidays it pretty much speaks for itself really
